How to Tell if Your Child Has ODD

ODD or Oppositional defiant disorder is a kind of behavioral disorder which is common in children of preschool or early school age. You may start to notice that you sweet child is suddenly aggressive, defiant and get irritable more often than usual. Of course it is important to be able to tell if your child is just being defiant or if he or she has ODD. If it happens to be this disorder your child will continue behaving destructively for at least six months. This is when parents should begin to worry however if one day your child behaves badly and the next day he or she is good as gold most likely you have no fears. Therefore it is good to educate yourself and be able to recognize the signs which may indicate ODD.

Signs to look out for:

Child looses temper quite often

Show total defiance against rules and requests from adults

Tends to argue with adults

Without being provoked annoys others around him or her

Shows signs of irritability more than usual

Tends to blame other for their own mistakes or misconduct

Shows signs of malice or revenge

Is often angry and becomes offended

What makes a child with ODD stand out from other children with different behavioral problems is that a child with this disorder has no regard whatsoever for the rights of other and for rules that are presented to them. In other words they seem to wreak havoc wherever they go much more than any other normal child would do.

Main causes of ODD are the factors as follows:

There may be abnormal changes in neurotransmitter function of the brain

Heredity

Something affecting the child psychologically at home or at school

Developmental delays

When these problems arise one can see a definite deterioration of how the child behaves socially, with family and academically. It has been determined by statistics that today at least 5% of children can be diagnosed by ODD. The good thing is that as hard as it is to go through this with a child these symptoms do go away in time. You must keep in mind though that there are some signs which affect the child at this time and can remain for his or her lifetime. Therefore it is up to the parents to do all they can to help their child once he or she is diagnosed with ODD.

Parents can help by:

Making sure to encourage their child to interact and be flexible

Strive to self-control

Creating a strategy for the child’s behavior

Make sure to set up boundaries which the child must not overstep

All along interact with your partner and/or the child’s teacher

Don’t overextend yourself to physical and mental exhaustion since this will not help your child

The road ahead is rough for any parents whose child has ODD so you must also comply with professional help from child psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists who have had experience with this disorder. They are the ones who can help in prescribing any medication if necessary and give professional advice which is much needed by parents.
