How to Recognize Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children
Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ODD, is a mental disorder that causes children to be very defiant and opposed to any kind of authority. It is normal for most children to be a bit defiant every now and then. This is nothing to be concerned about. It is just a typical occurrence during childhood. If a child actually has ODD, they will be this way on a daily basis. They will either go against or completely ignore every demand that you make of them. They will be unusually angry and bad tempered. Most of the time, the defiant child will also be aggressive. The level of aggression can be varied, but is usually pretty high. Schooling is of great concern with these children because they often do not do their work or do not do it to the best of their ability. They just usually do not care about these things and do not even consider the consequences of their actions. It sometimes seems as though they do not care about anything at all. Sometimes children who have been diagnosed with ODD also have other mental disorders. One that is very common is ADHD. This is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a common occurrence for children who have ODD to also be diagnosed with ADHD. This, of course, makes it even harder for the child to be able to concentrate and think about things such as what is right and what is wrong.
Having a defiant child is very hard on parents. It takes a lot of patience and energy to deal with the day to day situations that occur with these children. It is also difficult for the child who has been diagnosed with ODD because they get in trouble a lot and they sometimes just don\’t understand how to do things in a more constructive way. If your child shows any signs of ODD, you should start by speaking to their pediatrician about it and getting their advice on what steps to take next. Most likely, you will be advised to make an appointment for your child to see a therapist. A therapist can accurately diagnose your child and also offer you guidance on how to deal with this issue that is going to be a part of your day to day life for a long while. A good therapist is also a great way to help your child. Having someone to talk to other than family can sometimes be of help to children who have received a diagnosis of ODD. One common problem with therapy though, is that some of these children are stubborn to the point that they won\’t even talk to the therapist. They will just sit there and say nothing for the entire duration of their appointment. If this is the case with your child, this form of ODD treatment might not be of much help. It would be advisable to try this more than one time, however, before giving up on it. Take them to therapy at least three or four times to give the child a chance to get used to the therapist and the whole idea of talking to a stranger about themselves. If they do decide to eventually open up, this can be a great help to the child as well as the rest of the family as it could provide a way for the child to let go of things that are stressful for them.
