Treating a Child With ODD at Home
It can be a trying and confusing time for a parent once their child has been diagnosed with ODD or oppositional defiant disorder. It is always difficult to know how to deal with this as you can’t make a prognosis how your child will continue to behave and interact with other. He or she may be too much of a handful for grandparents and so on. Helping your child is not easy you have to fully understand what is happening and realize how your child thinks and how they make decisions. You as a parent must take a look at systems which have been developed for ODD and learn to understand the flaws in how an ODD child thinks and from this start a process to correct these flaws one step at a time. It is not easy but there is a whole world of help to be had online and you just have to choose by trial and error what will work for you and your child. It of course requires a great deal of understanding, time and especially patience but as you proceed you can keep a journal of the discoveries you make day in and day out and then you will see what progress if any you are making. This is about the best you can do if you choose to work with your child at home. Another thing is that if you find that your child does not respond to you and things get to be more difficult you can always consult with a professional and get them to come to your home so that they can see your home atmosphere and advise what may not be working in your situation and what you can do to correct the situation. If you adjust your home so that it may pacify a child with ODD then you may find that you are on the right track to reversing their defiant disorder. Remember that it may also be something or someone within your home that especially sets off your child and this is what you must discover before you can make any progress working with him or her at home. A child who doesn’t feel threatened by anything will also respond better.
