For all the things that a mother does for her children, one day of celebration in a year is a small tribute. There is no gift that can compensate mother’s love and care, but it is the thought that counts. Flowers are one way of saying thank you to her. Bouquets of flowers are given on Mother’s day as a token of love and affection. Popular arrangements of bouquets are carnations, daffodils, roses, tulips, freesia, pot chrysanthemums, iris and lilies. Traditionally, carnations are taken as flowers for mother’s day, but as many traditions go, there is no hard and fast rule that only carnations need to be given. It is the thought of making the most important person happy that matters. On mother’s day, carnations are given to the mother to indicate the love and respect that one has for her. This tradition was started in the year 1908 by Miss Anna Jarvis, who had sent 500 white carnations to the Andrews Methodist Episcopal church in West Virginia. The flowers were to be distributed to the mothers of the church. She gave 10,000 white carnations to the church the next year too, gradually beginning a tradition. Thus, the tradition of giving flowers to mothers on mother\’s day was started by Miss Anna Jarvis. The main reason behind this tradition is to pay a tribute to mother for all she has done to her children.

There is another legend related to carnations. The tears that mother Mary shed on seeing her son Jesus Christ suffering is said to have fallen on the ground and in turn grown into a beautiful and fragrant carnation. Here again, the association of carnations with mothers is emphasized. Though other flowers are given on mother’s day, carnations remain the favorite flower for this occasion.
