How to Harness Your Passions For Business
Where does one begin with an online–or any business idea? First ask yourself, “What are my passions? What excites me? At this point some confuse passion with motivation. The truth is, if you’re excited/passionate about something, the motivation will automatically follow.
I remember when I was in college taking an experimental psychology course. Each student, as you might have expected, had to come up with an experimental idea, conduct it and present his findings to the class. My idea was to determine what motivates a student to learn any body of knowledge. Specifically, I wanted to know if it was the personal excitement–passion, if you will–of the student for a subject matter or was it the excitement of the teacher for the subject. As it turned out, it was a little of both.
I wouldn’t recommend this study to anyone as scientific, since I forced the results into two possibilities; no other result was considered.
The professor, however, was interested in my idea of what motivates students to learn some things and not others. Our discussion followed to what motivates an individual to choose a certain career. It could be because a person likes to help others so they go into medicine. Maybe they like to argue and have a desire to see justice done and a person chooses law. Possibly one chooses a business of some sort because he/she wants to make a lot of money. The reasons are endless.
During the time I was in college, many people didn’t want to talk about their “job.” That was just too common. We heard for the first time such expression as “I have to find or fulfill myself.” WHAT?! The problem was that so many were looking for deeper meaning in life and this extended to their jobs. No one had a job. Everyone had a “career” or “calling.” Too many people, it seemed, lost their passion/excitement for life.
The professor went on to say to me “Kevin, imagine getting paid to do your hobby. You can call your job a career, calling or whatever. But it’s only a matter of time before you again realize it’s a job. Your only doing it for a paycheck to put food on the table and a roof over your family’s head. Yeah, the money is good, but you dread getting out of bed each day to go to work; you’re miserable.”
When he told me that I thought man, how does anyone find enjoyment in what he/she does. That’s depressing. “But,” he said, “you never tire of your hobby. You do it because you love it. You find interest and enjoyment in it. You never look at it as a job.”
That’s the key! Are you able to generate the same kind of passion and excitement for a business as you do for your hobby? What exactly attracts you to your hobby? Consider the many different businesses there are. Could you actually turn your hobby/passion into a business?
The internet offers you a world of possibilities. Start researching things in which you may have a business interest. If not business, then hobbies. It could be anything you find enjoyable and for which you have a passion that can be turned into a business idea.
You’re left with two options for an internet, home-based business: (I’m assuming it’s internet and home-based business that’s of interest to you) marketing your own product/service or marketing another’s product/service (affiliate). By far the easiest route to go is as an affiliate (called “joint-venturer” in the marketing industry).
Harnessing your passion which will guide you, you’ll want to affiliate with a reputable company that offers a sound, proven, good quality product/service.
It will also need to provide you with superior, easy to understand training, as well as have excellent compensation that’s paid out in commissions. It should, of course, provide you with outstanding marketing materials, along with knowledge of the marketing industry.
If it’s a far superior company, it will be motivated by a driving desire to help others. And for you as a valued joint venturer, the company should provide continuous growth in business and marketing, so that it’s a daily joy to hit the ground
running and harness your passions for business!
