Persuasive Communication

Persuasive communication is the art of bringing people round to your way of thinking, wither verbally or in writing. We’ve all had sales circulars through the post, where a particular item is made to look so attractive you can’t possibly turn the opportunity down. That is a form of persuasive communication. Persuasive communication can be used in a wide variety of situations. It is not limited to the likes of sales people and politicians. At one time or other in our lives, we’ve all had to persuade somebody to do something, maybe to help us out with something, or go somewhere with us. So, we are all capable of it on a small scale.

However, each different scenario requires different skills. Let’s say you have a meeting with one of your employees and you need them to do their work in a different way. It may not seem beneficial to the employee but it is for the company. Persuading the employee face to face can be difficult as facial expressions are important and mannerisms. Verbal communication face to face is quite difficult, especially if you are not a confident person.

The same conversation held by telephone could be quite different. All you need there are excellent communication skills and a persuasive attitude, with the voice to match of course. And, persuading people in writing is yet another completely different set of rules. Persuasive communication in writing requires an excellent command of language and a way of writing that comes across as beneficial.

One of the things that link each and every form of persuasive communication is confidence. Lack of it and you will be on a fast track to nowhere. Too much and youwill come across as fanatical. Neither are qualities that any audience appreciates so you need to strike the right balance right from the start.

You need to understand basic communication skills to be able to build on them effectively. Your form of communication must contain substance and must be worded in such a way that your audience will sit up and take notice. And you must be knowledgeable about your subject.

Verbal persuasive communication, although it requires the use of body language, is probably one of the easiest forms. Your audience can participate there and then and you can also gauge the impact you are having and, if necessary, alter the course of your communication. Written persuasive communication is quite probably the hardest form as you have to make that impact straight away and rely on it being good enough to have the desired effect.

Persuasive communication is part of everyday life. Some are better at it than others but the skill can be learned by all and can take you a long way in life. History is littered with great orators that have reached the tops of their careers purely through the art of persuasive communication. And these people are remembered, not just for who they were or are, but for what they have said.
