Sedation Dentist: A Friend Who Helps to Fight Pain
Sedation dentist is a dentist, who uses different sedative techniques to enable the patient to undergo treatment without anxiety or pain. They are well-qualified and are trained in anesthesiology with specialization in life support and in IV and Oral sedation. They also complete training in emergency management and conscious sedation as well. Sedation dentist decides the usage and type of sedatives based on the needs and the comfort level of the patient. However, not every patient qualifies for sedation, and the prospective patients for sedation include:
1.People who have fear for any dental procedure.
2.People who had traumatic experiences with a dentist previously.
3.People who find it difficult to stay calm or have complex dental problems.
4.People who have very sensitive teeth or have teeth that does not numb easily.
Sedation is essential for proper treatment because it ensures that the patient is relaxed and comfortable with the procedure. The dentist will not have any problem during the procedure, because the patient cooperates without any resistance and there will be control of the gag reflex. Another point to be considered is that, in case of minimal sedation, the patients can cooperate well with the dentist.
If the patients cooperates with the dentist, he can complete the procedure quickly which means fewer appointments and no more traumatic experience either. The Sedation dentist will also decide, if the patient requires minimal sedation or moderate sedation or deep sedation based on the treatment and complexity of the procedure. In minimal sedation, the patient is conscious and readily responds to the verbal conversation. It allows the patient to relax without feeling drowsy. In moderate sedation, the patient is more relaxed and responds after repeated trials. While in deep sedation, the patient might be unconscious and may not respond to any stimuli.
Based on the patient’s fear and dental problems, the Sedation dentist will decide the type of sedation that needs to be given. In general, sedative is administered by three routes.
Inhalation sedation: Laughing gas or nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen is given as an inhalation; it is a relative anesthetic and works very rapidly. The concentration of nitrous oxide depends on the level of sedation required. In cases, where longer periods of sedation is required, the sedation dentist may prefer IV route. One advantage of this method is that, there are very few side effects and the gas can be controlled at any given point of time.
Oral Sedation: In this type of sedation, Benzodiazepines commonly known as anti-anxiety pills are administered by oral route. They are given a few hours before the treatment to ensure that the patient has enough rest and is completely relaxed. Different types of oral sedatives are available in the market. In oral sedation, the patient stays relaxed during the entire procedure.
IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation): IV sedation induces deep relaxation and the patient will be indifferent to the procedure being done, though he or she will remain conscious and understands dentist’s requests.
When the dental procedures are long and painful, it is preferable to go to a sedation dentist to ensure that the procedure is completed without anxiety, pain or restlessness.
