Basic Wire Dog Crate Training

Every dog should have a pet crate to call his own. Wire dog crates are a good option because they are sturdy, chew-proof, and can be folded easily for storage or transport. They can be used in the home, in a vehicle, and at shows and canine sports events. They are not approved for airline travel.

Dog crates provide a den-like feel that makes dogs feel very comfortable. To enhance this effect with a wire crate, you can drape a blanket or towel over the top and three sides. You can also find decorative covers which are specially designed for wire dog crates.

Most dogs will take to a crate without much effort on your part. Usually, even if they put up a fuss when they are first put inside the dog crate, they’ll soon relax and lie down. In some cases, it may take a little time for the dog to learn that he or she must be quiet and calm. Be patient and it will happen.

You should be careful, though, not to let the dog think that crying or pawing will be successful in getting you to open the door to the pet crate. This is because the dog will associate his or her behaviour at the time with the result: being let out of the crate. For this reason, always be sure that he or she is quiet and calm when you open the door. That will teach the right way to behave.

For a dog who is having trouble learning to settle down in the wire crate, a little more training will be required. Start with just keeping him or her in the crate for a very short time, just a few minutes. Wait for a moment of quiet (it’s true this might be very brief, so do your best with the timing) and open the door, saying “Good dog!” or similar words of praise. Do this a few times a day, adding time day by day until your dog begins to behave consistently.

Beginning dog crate training with a puppy is a good idea, but even an adult dog can learn to love a crate. Feeding the dog’s regular meals in the wire crate is a classic method for getting him or her to associate the place with good things. You can also use treats or favourite toys to get your dog used to going into the crate.

Wire dog crates usually have two doors, one at the front and one at the side. This adds to the flexibility of the wire crate, because either door can be used depending on the situation. Just be sure to double-check that both doors are securely latched.

Trainers recommend that dogs should have pet crates available to them at all times. Many dogs like to have a private place to go, and they will use the crate for a resting place, even when they haven’t been put there. Wire crates are most flexible and attractive for the home, and can be folded for storage when not needed.
