How to Maintain a Motorhome
Motorhomes are a great way to travel independently across the country. Not only are you your own holiday-operator, but with motorhomes who are totally free to do what you want to do.
To ensure that your motorhome vacation runs as smoothly as possible, it is important that you maintain your motorhome regularly and properly. The better maintained your motorhome, the more fun your vacation will be. Remember, not only is your motorhome the means of getting to your destination, it is your destination and it should be treated with as much care and attention as you would expect from any hotel or resort.
First of all, it is crucial that you perform a thorough inspection of the vehicle. As with any travel over long distances, owners need to inspect oil levels, the motorhomes electrics, and general motor maintenance. These should be done every morning before you venture on the next leg of your journey. Remember, there is nothing as sad as seeing a motorhome crippled on the side of the road or puttering along a narrow lane with two miles worth of traffic behind.
As motorhomes are significantly heavier than other vehicles, the demands on the tyres are increased tenfold. Owners need to regularly check the tyres’ pressure levels and, importantly, use a reliable pressure gauge. If you’re unsure of what pressure levels are required, refer to your motorhomes service manual or ask professional advice, rather than guessing.
Nothing can put you off your vacation more than a smelly toilet. Fortunately, maintaining a motorhomes toilet is quite simple. Your motorhomes toilet basically operates the same way as the toilet in your home. In order to prevent foul odours, you need to regularly apply chemicals in the toilet. These not only keep your toilet smelling fresh, but they also help to breakdown waste matter and toilet tissue, which ultimately makes emptying the holding, tank a much more pleasant experience. Finally, do not put anything in your toilet that isn’t toilet paper. You do not want to spend your relaxing vacation elbow deep, unclogging the toilet.
In addition, plumping equipment are vital items in a motorhomes repair kit. The majority of plumbing repairs simply involve cracked or leaky joints but it is important that you are equipped with hose clamps, spare links of pipe, washers and duct tape
OK, now that you’ve sorted the inside, let’s concentrate on the motorhomes external features. The roof is normally comprised of various vinyl materials and is particularly susceptible when exposed to the sun and rain. It is important that the roof is cleaned as often as possible with clean water and then again with a detergent with bleach. The bleach not only kills mildew but also makes your roof appear whiter. Finally, once the roof is dry, apply a UV / rubber protector which ensures that the vinyl covering does not crack and split when exposed to constant sunlight.
In order to help keep your motorhome in tip-top shape, owners need to follow a strict maintenance program. Not only does this increase your knowledge of your home-away-from home, but it also prepares you should you face any unforeseen emergencies on the road.
