Facts on Ectropion: Causes, Complications and Treatments

As they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul, but sometimes it can get the message construed because the eyelids are giving the wrong impression. That is why eyelid surgery is done, in order to give the eyes a more rejuvenated appearance and to improve a person’s vision. Unfortunately in some cases complications occur, and one serious problem is ectropion.

What is ectropion?

This is a complication after blepharoplasty surgery where the lids, especially the lower eyelid turns outwards, exposing the inner surface. This results to dry eyes, redness, pain or irritation, chronic conjunctivitis, and excessive tearing.

There are no blood works necessary to confirm diagnosis because direct observation alone is a definitive sign of the problem.

Causative Factors

Poor skin condition or poor lid laxity can result to lower lid ectropion. Another reason that can cause this is excessive skin excision made during surgery. But other reasons could be congenital, paralytic, involutional, cicatricial and mechanical in nature.

Complications

If left untreated, the constant dryness and irritation of eyes can lead to eye infections, corneal abrasions and corneal ulcers. A major concern about these complications is that it can lead to blindness.

When you are experiencing increased redness, pain, poor vision, and sensitivity to light, you must immediately have this checked by your surgeon so that immediate treatment can be provided.

Treatment

In order to treat the eye problems that are caused by post-blepharoplasty ectropion, artificial tears can be applied to lubricate the eyes.

In mild cases of ectropion, the eyelids can be corrected by itself. But if this continues for six months, then you must decide to get an aggressive treatment. To improve the form of the eyelids a canthoplasty or canthopexy can be done.

What is Canthopexy or Canthoplasty?

A canthopexy is a surgical procedure where the lower eyelid is tightened by tightening the supporting structures. The procedure stabilizes the tendon without having to remove it from its original attachment.

Canthoplasty on the other hand is a more invasive approach because it requires the lateral canthal tendon (the structure that holds the lower lid) to be detached from the orbital rim, while a replacement is constructed in its place.

The aim of both procedures is to strengthen the lower eyelid by reinforcing the structural support.

How to avoid ectropion?

Although in most cases some factors cannot be avoided, but there is also something that you can do to prevent ectropion from occurring.

As mentioned earlier too much excising can lead to lower eyelid sagging after eyelid surgery. That is why it is essential that you choose a surgeon who is particularly skilled in blepharoplasty surgery. He should have the adequate training and experience to give you the assurance that he will be able to deliver quality results.

Adding to that you must never let the cost of the surgery lead you to settle for cheap services. Eyelid surgery is expectedly pricey but that is for a good reason. These are very sensitive structures and it takes careful manipulation and precision to ensure that the results are desirable.

If the purpose of your blepharoplasty surgery is for corrective measures, insurance companies would usually cover for it. But for complications like ectropion, where immediate treatment is necessary, it would not be hard to get insurance coverage for these.
