A Closer Look at the Different Hair Transplant Techniques

You might have heard about hair transplant, and how it can successfully restore a full head of hair. But one important detail about this procedure especially if you are considering this as a hair loss solution is the kind of technique that you want done.

When hair transplant was first introduced, the techniques were very primitive, and were usually rendering poor results. But as studies have improved and innovation continues, there are now three hair transplant approaches that have been used. These are FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation).

Let us first look into what is considered as the traditional method, and that is FUT. It is also dubbed as the strip method in that it requires the removal of a piece of scalp at the back of the head containing the donor hairs. This means that an incision would have to be made, and its length usually runs the entire back portion of your head.

The individual hair grafts are then extracted by a hair technician very carefully using a microscope, while the surgeon prepares the recipient site by creating micro-incisions. As the donor hairs are implanted the surgeon takes careful precision to ensure that they are at the right angle, distribution and direction.

The strip method is considered to be the most invasive among the three because it is the only approach which requires an incision. But the method is much sensitive to maintaining the integrity of hair follicles compared to the newer FUE.

FUE came into practice as a way to improve the aesthetic value of hair transplant results. Minus the need for any incision to sacrifice any part of your scalp, this technique involves the direct extraction of hair grafts from the head. It requires more time, effort and skill to pull off which is why it is more expensive than FUT.

The problem with FUE is that the nature of how the grafts are removed can place the hair follicles at higher risk of damage. Some surgeons claim that there is lower graft viability with this procedure which increases the risk for wastage.

But overall, what makes this technique work and continue to be an option for many hair transplant patients is that they don’t have to worry about any scars, which gives them freedom to wear their hair short.

But a much younger approach is also being practiced today and that is DHI. It has graced the heads of celebrities such as BBC sports reporter Andy May or famous Indian cricket player, Virender Sehwag.

DHI makes use of a special instrument that will carefully implant hair in uniformed depths over the recipient area. They are also spaced equally while at the same time properly distributing them to make the result come out natural-looking.

DHI is said to create better aesthetic results and can work on large amount of grafts compared to FUT and FUE. Wastage is also avoided because of the gentle handling created by the machine.

But the drawback about this is that there are not that many surgeons who perform this procedure. Despite the fact that the technology can make the hair transplant process much easier, it still isn’t a guarantee that it will give 100% success. The element of human error is still present, and hair surgeon with a good eye for detail and call for judgment is still very important.
