A Guide to Vintage-Inspired Wedding Hairstyles

The beauty of a vintage wedding is that it allows a bride to express her personality in a way that traditional ‘white weddings’ simply don’t. Vintage brides have an entire world of timeless fashion at their disposal, a wide range of gorgeous vintage dresses and accessories perfect for ultra glamorous retro nuptials.

As well as the bridal outfit, vintage brides can also take inspiration from the past for their hair and make-up. However, whereas make-up can easily be removed and reapplied again, styling hair for a wedding is an intricate process that can involve hours of styling and in some cases, quite a lot of hair being trimmed off! This means deciding on the perfect style beforehand is important – you don’t want to be unhappy with your hair on the big day and not be able to do anything about it. Luckily, we’re here to talk you through some popular vintage hairstyles and help you choose the right one for you!

Vintage hairstyles, much like dresses, can be divided into eras making it easy to match a certain style to the era you want to evoke. For example, a bride taking inspiration from the 20s and 30s should consider taking inspiration from the timeless glamorous style of flappers. Traditionally, the classic flapper style is a short bob that can either be worn straight or wavy. However, for a wedding waves are to be recommended for a classy, timeless look. This style is perfect for women with shorter hair or those willing to have their hair cut short.

The 40s and 50s offer plenty of style inspiration for the vintage brides. Icons such as screen siren Marilyn Monroe define the era and her classic medium length wavy bob is a guaranteed route to stunning vintage glamour. Women with longer hair can take inspiration from the ‘pin-ups’ of the era who usually wore their hair in an ‘updo’, long hair pinned, curled and styled with gorgeous results. Be warned if you do go for an updo – they’re quite tricky to do alone so enlist a friend to help out!

The hairstyles of the 60s and 70s reflect the ‘free love’ and revolution in people’s thinking that defined those decades, with plenty of long free-flowing hair and looser styles. If you’re going for a 60s vibe, think Audrey Hepburn and her beautiful, intricate oversized bun styles. The great thing about this hairstyle is that you can play around with the shape and style of the bun itself, leading it open for interpretation. The 70s was the decade of the hippy and free love, so reflect this with free-flowing curls left down.

Of course, not every bride bases their vintage wedding on a certain era and instead goes for ‘vintage’ as a broad theme. Thankfully, there are a couple of hairstyles which suit this broader theme. A wavy style is perfect for a timeless, classy look and suits either short or long hair. Women with longer hair should consider curls for that vintage look, although loose curls are more suited to the vintage style rather than tight curls. Straight hair, unless in a dramatic 40s style bob, generally doesn’t suit the vintage style.

The key to vintage glamour lies in the accessories and for hair this is no different. A vintage hair accessory, such as a tiara or comb, adds an extra edge of glamour to your look – a delicious cherry on top of the gorgeous bridal cake if you will! Vintage hair accessories, like dresses and jewellery, can either be old (like those sourced from specialist vintage dealers) or new, like those produced by designers specialising in vintage-style wedding fashion. Either way, the right hair accessory can add the perfect finish to a glamour vintage hairstyle!
