The museum is now one of only three buildings in the whole of Manhattan that bore witness to the Revolutionary War. As such it is one of of the more venerable New York Museums, and hosts an extraordinary collections of historical relics from that period. Visitors interested in pre-independence America will find themselves immersed in a world inspired by the events and characters of the Revolution, including a collection of paintings by artists from the 18th century onwards, including John Ward Dunsmore, an acknowledges master of American Revolutionary War.

Aside from collections dedicated to the revolutionary war, the museum hosts a a collection of daily life representations of ordinary New Yorkers from the past. Taken by the British in 1664, New York became a hotbed of revolutionary activity, and the Fraunces Tavern itself served as the offices of the Departments of War, Treasury and Foreign Office during the war.

Though not as well known as New York’s globally recognised symbols such as the Statue of Liberty, the Fraunces Tavern musuem is an absolute must for history buffs interested in America and New York’s past, and offers the discerning New York tourist an exemplary glance into the city’s role in the building of the nation.
