Face Lift: About The Procedure And Its Recovery
Most find it hard enough believe that plastic surgery has been around for nearly 4000 years, but they would also be amazed to hear that the face lift is not as modern a procedure as you would think. In fact, the rhytidectomy was first documented in 1901.
This procedure has been innovated over the last century to cause less scaring and a better overall result in the patients appearance thanks to these pioneers that advanced the field of plastic surgery to where it is today.
Dr Hollander first performed a face lift in 1901 on a Polish aristocrat that actually drew a picture for the doctor to better understand what she wanted. This unnamed Polish aristocrat was responsible for showing doctor Hollander that if he could somehow take up the excess skin in front of her ears the result would be a raising of the folds of skin around the nose and lips as well as a raising of the corners of the mouth.
Although this Polish woman persuaded doctor Hollander to perform a surgery he was reluctant to undertake, the results of this first face lift had less of an effect on the lady’s wrinkles than hoped. It seemed that the limited results of the new Hollander procedure were due to his limited incisions in the skin which only effect the outer layer of skin while ignoring the sagging muscles beneath.
In 1910, doctor Lexer developed the rhytidectomy further by advocating a deeper incision and repositioning not only the outer layer of skin, but also the subcutaneous layer which resulted in the raising of more wrinkles on a more permanent basis.
This procedure became the mainstay of surgeons until the 1970s when a doctor Skoog advocated going even deeper and manipulating the superficial musculoaponeurotic system which allows a face lift without it being necessary to detach the epidermis from the skull and causing unnecessary trauma.
Today’s modern rhytidectomy makes use of endoscopic incisions behind the hairline to leave no visible scars. This combined with other advanced techniques developed over the last century allows surgeons to create the best results for each unique patient they treat.
Even though modern plastic surgery is less invasive and traumatic than ever before, you may still seek other alternatives. If this is the case you should investigate the possibility of botox treatments and whether or not they can give you the results you need, but never forget the hard work and innovations of the past that make the face lift a viable option for many people.
