Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, John took his name from members of his first band Bluesology – saxophonist Elton Dean and frontman Long John Baldry. After the name change, John and Bernie Taupin became songwriters for Liberty Records. The two conducted music at the time through snail mail until the 1969 debut Empty Sky.

The album was critically accepted but few fans caught on to Elton John’s voice though they had been listening to his lyrics for years. John and Taupin paired up with producer Gus Dudgeon for 1970’s Elton John, which became popular overseas. “Your Song” was a top hit on the album and allowed John to release several more albums over the span of just a few months.

In 1972 John and his band (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone) released Honky Chateau to great reviews. The singles “Rocket Man” and “Honky Cat” were international hits and gave Elton his first American number one. From there it was sheer stardom for John, making him one of the best pop stars of the ’70s who maintained staying power like few others. Over the course of four years John and Taupin wrote and recorded over a dozen simultaneous Top 20 hits that enabled John to become one of the biggest stars of the century.
