NFL Tickets – Final Mock Draft: The Middle of the First Round
Here is how I think picks 11-20 will play out in the 2010 NFL Draft:
Denver Broncos – Rolando McClain, Interior Linebacker, Alabama: They need a receiver, but the team just traded a wideout with character issues, so it’s difficult to envision them taking Dez Bryant. The Denver defense was much-improved last season and I think they continue to build on that with McClain, who is the draft’s best tackler.
Miami Dolphins – Jason Pierre-Paul, Defensive End, South Florida: The Dolphins shored up their linebacking corps with the acquisition of Karlos Dansby this offseason, and they’ll look to improve their pass rush via the draft. Pierre-Paul is unpolished, but could be a beast under the right coaching staff. Miami has one of the best coaching staffs in the league and should be able to turn Pierre-Paul into a very good player.
San Francisco 49ers – Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida: The Niners desperately need help at corner and Haden is the best cornerback in the draft. He should end up being a steal at this point in the draft, so the Niners will be glad they got him. His 40 times at the combine caused his stock to slip, but he ran much better at his pro day and plays faster than his times indicate.
Seattle Seahawks – Earl Thomas, Safety, Texas: After missing out on Eric Berry I think the Seahawks will opt for the second-best safety in this draft. Thomas is good value here and fills a need for a defense that struggled last season.
New York Giants – C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Clemson: With McClain and the draft’s two best pass-rushers off the board, the Giants won’t be able to pass on the best running back in the draft. He’s the kind of home run threat that should sell plenty of NFL tickets.
Tennessee Titans – Everson Griffen, Defensive End, USC: The Titans need to find a way to get after the quarterback and Griffen Cialis is the best pass-rusher still on the board. I think Tennessee really wants Pierre-Paul, but will settle for Griffen. His combine performance suggests that he has the physical tools to get after the quarterback on the pro level.
San Francisco 49ers – Maurkice Pouncey, Offensive Guard/Center, Florida: The Niners have a lot of needs on their offensive line, and I think Pouncey is an attractive option for them because of his character and his ability Tadalis SX to play multiple positions. I really like this kid and think he’ll be a longtime starter in this league, perhaps even a Pro Bowler.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Mike Iupati, Offensive Guard, Iowa: The Steelers need to shore up their offensive line and Iupati, while not a tackle, should help in that area greatly.
Atlanta Falcons – Brandon Graham, Defensive End, Michigan: The Falcons did a good job of shoring up their secondary via free agency, which will allow them to address other areas of their defense in the draft. Graham should be able to play a hybrid role in this defense and get after the quarterback with regularity.
Houston Texans – Kyle Wilson, Cornerback, Boise State: I think Earl Thomas is an option here, but cornerback is a more pressing positional need after the departure of Dunta Robinson. I like Wilson a lot and he seems to be the number two corner on most draft boards. He should be able to contribute right away.
