NFL Tickets – Spiller and Mathews Both Should Have Fantasy Impact
Every season there are a few rookies that step into the spotlight in full throttle, much to the excitement of their team’s fans and for fantasy football managers. Last season, wide receiver Percy Harvin burst onto the scene as a big-time fantasy player and running back Beanie Wells gained strength throughout the season, giving him tremendous Levitra Professional value for keeper leagues. This year, there are a horde of new offensive rookies drafted in the first round who will have a chance to make a similar impact. Here are the ones to keep an eye on.
Ryan Mathews, running back, San Diego Chargers: With LaDainian Tomlinson being cut and picked up by the New York Jets, the door was wide open for a rookie running back to step in as his replacement. Darren Sproles is a nice player but isn’t the type of every-down back that can get it done in the NFL. For that, the Chargers traded up to the 12th overall pick to select Mathews, a bruising back who can do everything well.
Mathews is in the best position to have a fantasy impact from week one. For one thing, it’s fairly obvious that he will get a bulk of the carries, with Sproles being utilized more in third down and passing situations. The other advantage for Mathews is that he’ll be playing on one of the most explosive offenses in the league. While Philip Rivers ensures that the Chargers will be able to move the ball very well, Mathews will be in great position to get a lot of touchdowns and could be a fantasy stud in 2010, even if he doesn’t Brand Viagra rack up a ton of yards. Remember, even in an overall horrible year last season, Tomlinson still rushed for 12 touchdowns due to the prolific offense.
Dez Bryant, wide receiver, Dallas Cowboys. Some have taken issue with Bryant’s off-the-field problems, but that never has concerned Cowboys owner Jerry Jones very much. Bryant has elite talent and will be playing with one of the better quarterbacks in the league in Tony Romo. Bryant should be a starter from day one and it is certainly not out of the question that he could be the offensive rookie of the year.
C.J. Spiller, running back, Buffalo Bills. Even though selecting Spiller didn’t necessarily make a great deal of sense for the rebuilding Bills, he’s an exciting player that has the most offensive talent on the team as soon as he arrives in Buffalo. The Bills have significant holes on their offensive line, but Spiller will be utilized in more creative packages that won’t rely on running the ball between the tackles. Spiller could be a risky fantasy draft pick, much like he is for the Bills, but he also has great versatility and tremendous upside. He will also help Buffalo sell plenty of NFL tickets.
Demaryius Thomas, wide receiver, Denver Broncos. Thomas has comparable talent to Bryant and could even be the better long-term pro. However, the Broncos have now created a mess at quarterback and struggled last season to throw the ball late in the season, even with stud wideout Brandon Marshall still on the team. A lot will be expected out of Thomas in his first year and he has the talent to come through, though the questions at quarterback have to be a concern.
High risk, high reward:
Tim Tebow, quarterback, Denver Broncos. No matter what you think of the Broncos’ first round pick, you have to admit that it was interesting. There are certainly plenty of skeptics that doubt Tebow’s ability to adjust to the pro game and I find it very hard to imagine him ever being a true pocket quarterback. However, head coach Josh McDaniels has the offensive creativity to use Tebow in other ways and he likely has a plan to use him in certain packages already.
Tebow could be a huge fantasy bust, but he also could be used in Wildcat-like formations, particularly near the goal line. Though he won’t see the field a ton in 2010, he still could rack up quite a few rushing touchdowns and mix in a few passing ones as well in minimal snaps. Though he’s certainly a tremendous risk, you could turn out to be the genius of your fantasy draft if you take Tebow and he ends up being a quality fantasy player.
