Playing poker in a Las Vegas casino, whether it’s a few hands of low stakes five card stud or a high rolling Texas Hold ‘Em tournament, is something that a lot of gamblers aspire to do.

If you’re one of these people, but have actually booked your flights to Las Vegas and are ready to go, there are 4 tips that you need to keep in mind when you arrive in the famous Sin City.

1. Don’t take your phone with you – over the past decade, it’s become somewhat acceptable to take your camera into a Las Vegas casino, primarily for the fact the area has tried to aim to the wider market, making Las Vegas more of a family friendly part of the world.

This is not to say that you’ll be welcomed with open arms to take photos inside a casino, but you’ll not often be asked to leave because of it.

Mobile phones, however, are a different story. Use them inside a casino away from any poker tables (or card game tables in general) and you won’t have any problems. Bring them with you to a table, however and you’ll be asked to leave straight away.

Turn it off, keep it in your pocket or better still, give it to someone who isn’t playing.

2. Always tip – in Las Vegas, it’s just short of being a state law that you have to tip practically everyone. Wages aren’t as substantial as you might think they are and are relatively low compared to those in the UK (which is the reason why a lot of Brits find it somewhat of a culture shock having to tip when in America).

It may take a day or two to get used to it, but you’ll soon get into the swing of things. Tipping 20% on top of meals is the standard and for most other things (bar workers, concierge, waitresses, etc), a dollar or two will be fine.

The only other person to remember to tip that you might not think of is the croupier. Whether it’s one dollar or one hundred dollars, leave them a tip when you leave the table, simply to say thanks.

3. Keep your chips close by – in Las Vegas (or any casino, in fact), chips are just as valuable as money and why it is important to keep them close by is that they are not person-specific, therefore anyone could pick up some of your chips, walk to the change counter and cash them in without any problems.

Whilst it is generally considered safe, Las Vegas had a period of high crime that was apparent in the 1970s and 1980s (a time when floods of people shied away from Las Vegas in favour of Atlantic City, the second biggest gambling area in America), it’s still worthwhile keeping your chips close to your chest and never trust anyone to keep an eye on them for you.

4. Move around – there are around 1,700 licensed gambling premises available in Las Vegas, many of which are open 24 hours.

Although it can be tempting to play in just one casino that you like for hours on end, doing so at a time when you feel most comfortable, such as between 9pm and 11pm after a beautiful meal, try and not to stick to these times.
