Building A Website vs. Outsourcing It For Your Small Internet Business

So, you have decided to start a small internet business. You bought all the necessary equipment and software, scooped up every eBook on the internet and had a few mild heart attacks once you realized all it takes to actually build a small internet business from home.

So now what? Well, for one thing without a website you will not have much of a chance on the intensely competitive Internet. Your website is your virtual piece of real estate, the thing that says, “Hey, I’m here Internet world.” So without it you’re kinda like a business owner without an establishment.
The only way to compete as a small internet business owner is to have a website to drive your traffic towards. There are two ways to get a website in your possession, either have it built, or create one yourself. The question I get all the time is which one is better?

Personally I have done and continue to do both. For my particular situation it is the most advantageous. Let me explain. For my main website I wanted to have it look super professional with slick graphics and complex software programs. Unless you look like a member of the “Big Bang Theory” however then most likely building a complex website from scratch is not your forte.

If you want to buy a website or have one constructed for your small internet business then you have several options. The first is to have one made from scratch if you have a definite vision of what you want. To have a website made from scratch you can go to sites like eLance and Odesk. Just like any group of perspective employers you will find the good, the bad and the ugly there however. Make sure to check all credentials of your prospective web builder and any feedback they may have gotten from previous employers. I would strongly suggest that you only pick candidates that have a good amount of solid feedback and at least a 100 hrs of working experience since joining the site. Elance and Odesk have been invaluable to me when I need a website created for my small internet business fast.

If you are more open to what small home business you want to start you also may want to visit a place called Flippa. Flippa is an auction site where people buy and sell webites. Just like the outsourcing wesbites you need to be careful about who you buy from and always check their credentials. They get feedback and comments just like the folks at eLance and Odesk.

You can also buy a website which is already making a profit so you don’t have to start from scratch. However make sure that the seller sends you proof of income before buying their site. Many sellers ramp up sales for a month and the claim that the site has been bringing in that kind of traffic and revenue for months already. Just like anything use common sense and you should be fine.

So why do I still build my own websites too?

Well, firstly what I build are more “squeeze” pages or landing pages for my prospective customers. I use a software program from a company called Homestead and pay a very reasonable monthly fee to host the websites I create for my small internet business. The great thing about this software is that it is completely cut and paste and requires no web design or web programming knowledge. For example if I am launching a new product I simply create a quick landing page for people to visit. I will write a little text, upload a YouTube video or other video source and paste in an opt in box. That’s it. All those steps should take no more than 5 minutes, tops once I have compiled the material itself .

In the end I use both methods because my small internet business needs that kind of flexibility. I am not interested in waiting days, perhaps weeks for a landing or “squeeze” page to be made by someone form eLance or Odesk. Most of the time the material I want to get out is extremely time sensitive and I need to act quick. That is when this software comes in handy. Just like I don’t want to spend months trying to figure out how to build and implement a complex membership site so I outsource it. Remember, you want your small internet business to run as efficiently as possible.
