Philadelphia is a great city full of history and entertainment. Here is a guide to some of the most popular spots to visit while you are in the area.

Philadelphia is the birthplace of America and the city where the founding fathers lived. It is also where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Today, that history echoes through the walls of the original buildings and museums of the area that are often referred to as “Historic Philadelphia.” It lacks defined boundaries and covers parts of the Old City and Center City neighborhoods including the Independence National Historic Park.

Here are some of the most popular, interesting and informative places to visit in the area. It is not all inclusive, not exhaustive, but it includes the most encompassing locations if you are trying to see as much as you can in one trip.

The first location to visit is the Liberty Bell which is held as a symbol of freedom in Philadelphia as well as across America. The ubiquitous cracked bell is on display along with information about the bell’s history and its significance to America.

A trip to visit this historic icon is free and can be found on Market Street. It has been featured in many movies including National Treasure and should not be missed.

Also, Independence Hall is a historical site that leads you on a guided tour of the building courtesy of re-enacting professionals who will show you where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Entrance is free, but between March and December, tickets are required.

Information about getting tickets is available on their website. It is also located on Chestnut Street.

The National Constitution Center features a variety of permanent and changing exhibits which are fascinating. It shows the occurrences surrounding the U.S. Constitution and American history along with many special events.

Franklin Court is another must see to add to the list. This is where Benjamin Franklin’s house used to stand.

Unfortunately, it was torn down in the early 1800s; but, today the site the where the house once stood is known as Franklin Court and it features a steel framed outline of his home, a museum with a print shop, a working post office where you can send letters hand stamped with Franklin’s original postmark and much more.

Another fabulous location in the city of Philadelphia is Elfreth’s Alley which is the oldest residential street in America. This small Old City street offers a museum and several historic houses, many of which still serve as private residences.

This is a classic architectural site that is interesting to many. It is easy to remember the location as it is found just on Elfreth’s Alley.

The Betsy Ross House is another great find. However, no one is sure whether Betsy Ross lived at this location or at the house next to it which has been demolished for a long time now.

But, the Betsy Ross House is over 250 years old and has been furnished as it was during Betsy’s time. It features a Betsy Ross impersonator and artifacts to teach about the famous flag maker; it is located on Arch Street.

The American Philosophical Society Museum is another great place where in 1743, writer, statesman, scientists and Philly’s son Benjamin Franklin founded the American Philosophical Society with some friends. It is dedicated to scientific study and now runs as a museum which is focused on science, history and art in the original building.

Carpenter’s Hall was where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. It is a building that also served as the home for the Library Company of Philadelphia and as a meeting place for groups like the American Philosophical Society.

The Declaration House is where Thomas Jefferson rented rooms in 1776 and is also known as the Graff House, after its owner, Jacob Graff, JR. This is where Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

So, there is a list of some of the most commonly visited and most popular locations to visit throughout Philadelphia. They are all interrelated and there are many more to see, but this will give you a good start.
