Putting a greenhouse into your backyard is an investment. It’s not often going to pay for itself in the first year. It can be quite worthwhile, however, even if you don’t buy a large greenhouse for your yard.

When you’re buying a greenhouse, you have to think about the space you’re willing to give it. Most people do not want to turn their entire garden area into a greenhouse. They want it to cover just a small part. Fortunately, there are greenhouses of all sizes and price ranges to cover almost anyone’s needs.

Longer Growing Season

Having a longer growing season is one of the biggest reasons people buy greenhouses. You don’t have to extend your active gardening to the entire year. You can use your greenhouse to get an early start and to keep things going a little longer than they would otherwise.

A greenhouse is a huge help in the spring, especially in areas where you might have snow around longer than you’d like. You can start your seedlings in late winter or early spring, and be able to put them in the ground just as soon as you’re pretty sure you won’t get any more frost on the ground.

You can keep crops in your greenhouse through the summer if you’d like. You may need to keep an eye on the temperature inside the greenhouse so that you don’t overheat your plants. This is best for plants that can cope with some heat, although with good venting and fans you should be able to maintain a reasonable growing temperature in your backyard greenhouse.

Plants in your greenhouse may keep producing during fall and winter. Depending on the climate of your area, you may need to have heaters in your greenhouse to keep your plants warm enough to keep producing.

Pest Control

While you probably won’t keep all pests away from your garden plants inside a greenhouse, you will deal with fewer of them. Small insects can still find their way inside, but plants in a greenhouse are less likely to be attacked by gophers or birds.

Some bugs should be welcome, of course. You may need bees to pollinate your plants, in which case it may be easier to move the plants outside for a time. Potted plants can always be carried back into the greenhouse overnight or after staying out for a time.

Your greenhouse should be a pleasure to own for a number of years. Your investment will pay itself back in terms of produce grown or flowering plants enjoyed.
