Why Not to Take a Dental Holiday
I am a big fan of dental holidays. In fact, I took one for the first time four years ago and do not regret it one bit.
In my mind and situation at the time, traveling to Thailand to get my dental work done was the best option and I will recommend this to nearly everyone who needs it. However, there are some people and procedures that do not require you to travel overseas.
1- Insurance
The main reason people travel abroad to get dental work done is the cost. They either have no insurance or the insurance company they thought would take care of them declined coverage. Maybe this was because the procedure is considered cosmetic or maybe they have just maxed out their coverage allowance. But for whatever reason, the individual was not covered.
However, if you do have insurance and it will cover your procedure, by all means use your local dentist. If you can get your work done for free, without the time of traveling or the cost of accommodations, then get it done locally.
2- Unable to Travel
Dental holidays require you to travel. If for some reason you are unable to travel then this is not for you.
3- Unwilling to Travel
Most of the countries recommended to travel to for this holiday are reasonably safe. I had my work done in Thailand and never felt threatened once. In fact, I felt safer walking down the streets of Bangkok than I would in Los Angeles. Fear is a big reason why people do not travel abroad.
Some of us are afraid to fly and taking a boat to Thailand is not an option. If fear of travel is a big one for you, then traveling abroad to get dental work done would be a very difficult choice.
4- Needed Checkups
If the procedure you need done requires intensive checkups often, then traveling abroad will be a difficult decision for you due to the finances of many trips back and forth.
As stated, I am a big fan of health based holidays. However, if you fall into one of the above categories, you may want to look at some other options.
