Being Taught by the Trip to Antarctica
Eighteen days later in icy Antarctica, arriving at the airport without delay have seemed to be a warm and special homecoming.
After nearly three weeks journeying the bottom of the world, four members of the expedition to Antarctica was home for a hero’s welcome. This makes up history and an incredibly emotional event for us all.
Terrible weather condition restricted the Antarctica’s scientific quest for about 10 more days than anticipated, therefore, as the arrival day finally came, the welcome party was arranged immediately.
Immediate relatives and acquaintance sat in black plastic airport chairs peep in at the large windows on the runway and glancing at their watches about an hour earlier as the plane was about to land.
Down the hall, 25 students together with instructors and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and were ready to coddle their teacher with hugs.
The welcome troops brought a bouquet of heart shaped balloons, a dozen roses and a stack of handmade welcome signs bearing pictures of penguins.
The four team members brought two backpacks of meteorites which will be taken photographs, cut open and experimented and shared tales about their accomplished mission.
The expedition also included two retired NASA astronauts, a NASA scientist and a Chicago resident who, contributed significantly in funding part of the expedition.
The quest directed the group to the Patriot Hills of Antarctica, South Pole and Thiel Mountains not so high as the Rockies, but just as attractive.
Upon reaching the States, one team member had something to complain about the technology they had brought along.
They had satellite phones that were no good. All they do is be a representation of what you left behind.
In no time he will be able to return to being a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent.
For these people, such a trip to an unfamiliar territory has been experienced before. From the coast of the Black Sea last summer was where two of them and their scientific team were able to view the solar eclipse in Turkey.
While there, like the unanticipated package of extra days in Antarctica, the two got a little more than they bargained for.
After the eclipse they still could not leave because of a very strong earthquake that occurred at the time.
They were 200 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake and so the magnitude that jolted them measured at only 5.5.
His memories of Antarctica are less terrifying, images of blue ice fields, snow covered scenery and one of the best parts of the trip for him was camaraderie.
For him the team, which included a retired NASA scientist, was an exclusive club. But they’re down to earth people no pun intended, very easy to talk to, very easy to be with.
Only fun and not egos was their priority. Their days in Antarctica, even the unanticipated ones, were filled with reading, talking, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling.
Around one month ago one 24 year old member of the team showed reporters and staff members her outfit for the trip which included heavy gloves, boots, goggles, and an energetic smile.
A sweatshirt and some jeans plus some sneakers were what she wore back home with her cheerful smile. Because she incorporated space science in her classes, she was chosen for this Mars like continent.
Such a trip provided students with an unusual opportunity. Kids tying everything in leads to learning.
With a teacher who is also an explorer comes about living in science and history for the kids.
She used the trip to perform scientific experiments on rocks, gravity and temperature the same experiments students were doing back home.
Data were transmitted to students from 11 classrooms via satellite phone and email. Not only the questions raised but also the answers given were hilarious.
With the answers given, funny was how they Brand Cialis differed. It was that results can differ when experiments are done in a snowy desert where temperatures are well below zero that the students learned from her.
