The very first trading post was opened by C.P. Higgins and Francis Worden. With the completion of the Mullan Road that connected Fort Benton and Montana with Walla Walla was one of the major reasons for the very fast growth of burgeoning city. The University of Montana was another reason for the rapid development of the city.
