What Is out There for Eating in Iran?
Iranians habitually used to eat traditional food at home, which takes quite some time to prepare. As the country is going through some modernization process, both husbands and wives are working outside home. So, those time-consuming Iranian dishes take too much time to make. Something quick must be served as everyone is hungry: Fast food!
Eating Traditional Dishes in Iran
Housewives, who are supposed to prepare food for all those who spend time outside during day (husband at work and children at school), usually make some of the most different types of food at home. Iranian cuisine is a moderate one, not so fat and not so hot. The amount of meat in food depends on culture, region and financial status of the families.
What is traditionally made at home is varied from area to area, but generally they are:
Stews: They contain different ingredients like meat, vegetables, grains, etc mixed with spices. At the side of such dishes, there is always another dish of cooked rice that should be taken together with stew. Some examples are Qormeh Sabzi, Fesenjun, Qeymeh, etc.
Mixed rice: They contain vegetables, grains, and sometimes meat. Sometimes, meat is also added to it so that it can be filling and provide sufficient calories. Some examples are Cialis Jelly Adas Polo, Lubia Polo, Albalu Polo, etc.
Aash: An Iranian thick soup made of peas, beans, thick noodles, vegetables and some herbs. It can be main course by itself and could have different ingredients in different parts of Iran.
Eating out in Iran
When the family decides to go out eating in Iranian restaurants, they are served something that is not so easy to make at home: skewed kebabs (grilled meat). That is why when you are traveling in Iran and go to the restaurants to have a meal, you will see there are a whole range of different kebabs and hardly anything else.
Sometimes, you may find some foreign food like filet mignon, chateau briand, etc. It is always better not to expect too much of such items from your menu. The recipes are changed somewhat and made with local constituents.
Eating in Iran Today
Young generation, kids, busy parents and so on are looking for fast food. The main purpose could be to have something different or quick. The least concern is to have something of value or spend some time taking pleasure by eating. The good news is that the public media and general opinion is trying to persuade people to take more nutritious healthy food than quick make-me-full stuff.
Remember to be ready for a tough vegetarian diet in Iranian restaurants. Due to large amount of meat in Iranian cuisine, local dishes are rarely void of meat. You cannot expect a wide variety of foodstuff while eating out in Iran. You will have to invent some dishes and ask the chef to make it for you or simply stick to very few options you may have. Yet, you will survive.
