The institution of marriage is one recognized worldwide as one of the oldest rituals of joining two people in love in a legalized bond for a lifetime with social approval. The essence of the ceremony is conjunction, albeit it is performed in widely different manners throughout the world. In fact, the institution being so ingrained in our paradigms that sometimes, we forget to ask something rather crucial about the nature of this institution. What motivates it? Why do people willingly bind themselves in such an (ideally) unbreakable commitment? Why do people get married?

Surveys show that the number of weddings have gone down significantly over the years. Given that the average wedding costs 20 000 £, it is not surprising. Keeping the expenses in mind, people today prefer to wait till they have the kind of savings that would permit them to afford such a ceremony. Statistics corresponds with this, since the average marriage age among men has gone up to the range between 34 and 37.

-The basic motivation behind a marriage – or rather, more appropriately, the basic inspiration for this ceremony – is the love that binds two individual. No other consideration, whether it is social, religious or otherwise, holds any more sanctity than the feelings of the two involved.

-In today’s society, a lot of people just get married in order to continue their family name and their legacy as a baby is always assumed to be on their way. Even though the earlier stigma that was once used to be stamped on unmarried pregnant woman has faded with time, it has not died out completely. Moreover in some cultures women need to have babies even before then can get married in order to prove that they are fertile and can continue the bloodline. There also some who think that having a child can strengthen their marriage.

-Some people want to have a big get together with their loved ones and the best opportunities would be at a wedding.

-Sometimes young people get married to free themselves from their parents’ bondage and thus away from their parental house.

-There are people who marry with the hope of financial stability that the marriage can bring in.

-Lonely people who stay alone want to get out of their isolation and find a partner for life that can save them the pain of being alone for the rest of their lives. This way they can escape their problems and lead a happier life.

There are different marriage rules all over the world. For example, some states in the USA do not allow people to marry their in-laws and some states have made it compulsory for couples to go through medical tests in order to prevent the transmission of harmful diseases. At most places you can only be married to one person but there are certain places where this is not followed religiously.

In earlier years, a couple could have become married by just declaring themselves to be married but now there are many rules and regulations that needs to be followed. A marriage is a more public event through which everyone becomes aware of it.
