An Analysis of Famous Love Sayings Throughout History

Different ways of expressing love vary as greatly as the words that have been put together to describe this mysterious little all-consuming feeling that has us create love sayings in the first place. It is interesting to ponder the thoughts of just where many of the more famous love sayings started or what happened to bring about the initial thought. It could have been an event of catastrophic proportions or something as small as a quick thought that just about slipped off the tongue and caught on. It is for sure that love sayings have been around as long as there has been the feeling and a way to convey the that emotion through words with some form of verbal communication; it could be the best, most famous and far-reaching of these feel so appropriate at times and that is because they were heartfelt expressions from those who have felt love strongly.

In the case of some simple old love sayings such as “love is blind” or “cold hands, warm heart” we may wonder whether these would have been literal at the time they were first spoken or if they evolved out of a concept that was mentioned in passing. Can love actually see? Does it have eyes and the ability to perceive light and dark or distinguish shapes? Love sayings taken literally may have a person believing so. Maybe a blind man fell in love with a woman and the expression came about and now there are other, metaphorical meanings associated with it. A person with cold hands is said to have a warm heart; would this mean that anyone having a snowball fight while not wearing gloves should instantly turn into a warmhearted giving caring individual? Love sayings are fun to look at and theorize on. Taking “Love is blind” as an example of a concept of feeling vs. an actual flaw in a person’s natural senses not due to emotional state. This can be a perception that one has where they put up with or may not even notice what others may deem as a poor character trait thus blinding them to this little idiosyncrasy that others might not ever get past.

In many love sayings the words seem to say exactly what the thought may be however they can get another look and have it turned around. Love sayings along the lines of “all is fair in love and war” sound flowery yet cynical. Some love sayings even contradict one another like “absence makes the heart grow fonder” and “out of sight out of mind.” Though taking another look, would one really believe that there is no wrong in love or war and that everything is alright? That is doubtful. It may be that one in love might not see another’s flaws or that, as one in love, to win a war one must be allowed to do whatever it takes for their cause. The reality of the absence of a person you care about means that you would be lonely is it then true that you would now become more fond of this person or just do not wish to be alone? With all of this said it just may have to be that love sayings mean just what they need to at the time and just what a person needs to feel.
