The Practical Aspects of Laser Teeth Whitening
Sometimes in articles we discuss the results and the technical aspects to laser teeth whitening but here we are going to be discussing the practical do’s and don’ts before and after the treatment.
Like many things we have never experienced before we do not know what is going to happen and the is true with laser teeth whitening as it a fairly recent treatment in the UK and here are some the questions we get asked about the treatment.
Brushing the Teeth
This is a common question as people do not know if they should brush their teeth on the day of the treatment. The answer is yes carry on with your normal habits. Most laser consultants will ask you to brush the teeth with a pumice just before the treatment as this is very gritty and will remove any residual food and staining residing on the surface of the teeth.
Smelly Breath
Most teeth whitening consultants can cope with bad breath so there is little need to using mouthwash or mints before your appointment.
Coffee or Tea Before the Treatment
Can i drink a cup of coffee or tea prior to the treatment we get asked and again the answer is yes before the treatment is fine it is after the treatment which you need to avoid tea and coffee. More on this later in the article.
Painkillers for the Sensitivity
Taking a few painkillers that you would take typically for a headache is perfectly acceptable just in case you get some sensitivity either during or after laser teeth whitening. This will numb the pain and make it bearable.
What Should I Wear
Please this should not even be discussed but yes we have been asked this. The answer is whatever you feel most comfortable wearing for roughly and hour on the whitening couch!
Teeth Whitening Before a Party or Event
If possible try avoiding having your teeth whitened on the same day or day before a party of a big event. This is because if you get sensitivity it might ruin the event and you need to be disciplined what to consume for 48hours after the treatment which are going to discuss more next.
What to Consume and Avoid for 48 Hours After Laser Teeth Whitening
So the teeth are very porous for a minimum of 48 hours after the laser whitening treatment and therefore you need to avoid anything that is going to re-stain the teeth. This is not an exhaustive list but includes tea, coffee, cola, fizzy drinks, red wine, blackcurrants, curries, gravy, pasta sauce, beetroot, soya sauce to name just a few. The best way to think about what to avoid is if you spilt it on a white towel and it stains it then avoid putting it in your mouth for 48-72 hours after the treatment.
Can I Smoke After the Treatment
No as again this will re-stain the teeth whilst are very porous!
I hope this helps a little bit to making laser teeth whitening simpler for you!
