Enjoy Great Water Sports in Lanzarote
Those who holiday in the Canary Island of Lanzarote will often visit the location due to its many attractive characteristics: great beaches, a variety of worldly cuisine, masses of tourist attractions and finally, its glorious weather any time of the year. However, more and more people are taking a holiday in Lanzarote to enjoy the wide range of world-class water sports that the island offers.
Surrounding Lanzarote is the warm Atlantic Ocean which has an average temperature, which rarely falls below 19oC, perfect for water sports any time of the year. The south coast is especially good for swimming, diving, snorkeling or boat excursions, whereas the north south houses rougher conditions that are perfect for windsurfing, sail boarding, wave surfing and sailing.
Sailing is a pastime which is enjoyed by many of the island locals, as well as tourists who visit the island yearly. Even if you have no experience of sailing, it is a beautiful sport and by hiring your own charter boat whilst on your vacation, you can experience this for yourself. There are a wide range of organizations and boat clubs on the island who can provide you with courses, equipment and a boat; however, if you want to enjoy sailing without the work, they can also arrange excursions for you with your own team on board.
Swimming is a pastime enjoyed by holidaymakers of all ages, as it is a gentle exercise that allows you to cool off from the heat. The island boasts a wide range of beaches that offer a variety of different sands and crystal clear waters. When swimming in secluded beaches however, take care to look for rocks and be sure to check out if there are any dangerous currents in the area you are swimming in if you take a dip whilst exploring the island.
Lanzarote is the perfect destination for those who are fans of windsurfing and it is a popular pastime among many of the locals. There are many schools and centers which teach the sport along the beach and throughout the rest of the island who can offer lessons during your stay – you may even spot a few windsurfing champions here as many favor the island for their training. One of the best spots for windsurfing is Costa Teguise as the wind is known for picking up well during the afternoon.
Lanzarote is seen to many to be the second best location for surfing after Hawaii as it has some of the best waves in Europe. The north-eastern shore is known for having some of the hardest waves, but is best suited to experienced surfers. Those who love a challenge will enjoy the famous beach near Jameos del Agua where the waves break up into multiple sections over the volcanic reef.
Those looking for a bit of fun with their family and/or friends will enjoy cooling off whilst riding a jet ski or water ski. These are widely available for hire on most beaches. Many of the beaches will also provide the chance to ride pedal boats and banana boats. These are great for those who are not skilled in surfing, etc but still want some fun in the sea and these rides can often be haggled for a good price. Finally, there is the chance to explore all that the Atlantic Ocean has to offer through scuba-diving. This is a popular pastime for many tourists as it allows them to explore the sub aquatic volcanic world whilst also viewing the wide variety of marine life that can be found in the ocean. There are many wrecks that have sunk and created a brilliant underwater marine park bursting with marine life such as angel sharks and varieties of rays. There are many diving centers on the island which can help teach you the basics and take you to the best spots on the island.
When it comes to cooling off in the hot Lanzarote sun, don’t run for the shade. Why not take advantage of the amazing water sports available on the island and have some fun while you get refreshed!
