Ties are not as simple as they seem. In fact, they have a long and illustrious history, one which takes in many different eras. Having a tie around your neck is now seen as absolutely essential if you want to get ahead in the world of business, but it is also becoming a more accepted component of smart casual wear too.

Ancient Chinese statues and figurines can be seen with clear evidence of ties and cloth fixed around their neck, so that shows you just how much history is attached to this particular dress item. A long time ago the Croatians had reason to battle with the French, and took to wearing an early version of the necktie then. This lead to the modern day cravat, and then the tie.

These days, having a tie around your neck is part of the modern suit. Having one as part of your business attire makes it very clear to others that you are a serious, professional person. In many professional circles today, for example, not wearing a tie is seen as rude. It is for this reason that the tie industry continues to flourish. There will always be suits, and there will always be ties that go with them.

There are really only two types of tie that are worn these days. The most common is the neck tie, which is the kind of tie most people are familiar with. However, some men still wear a bow tie, even to a business meeting. This is becoming rarer each year, as for some people, wearing a bow tie denotes a certain level of eccentricity. Obviously, a bow tie can be worn with a tuxedo to a rather pleasing effect, and this purpose continues to be the one most commonly associated with the item.

When it comes to knots, the more complex the knot, the more advanced professionally the person is deemed to be. If someone wears a full Windsor knot, for example, there is every chance they are extremely accomplished or at least possessing some considerable social status. When one sees someone wearing a tie in the everyday business environment, it is usually tied in a classic Half Windsor style.

One quirky little tradition as regards bow ties regards colour and time of day. If you wear a bow tie on a regular basis for example, it is generally seen as good form to only wear a black bow tie after dark. In the day time the opposite is true, with a white bow tie the expected colour before sunset.

Ties denote status, and in some cases, which school or college you went to. They are easy to buy and make a statement with, simply due to the sheer number of options that are out there on the market. Remember to take your time when choosing a tie. Making the right choice can be the difference between being received well by the people who you are mixing with – whether professionally or casually – or losing credibility very quickly.
