How to Define Your Topic

Your best option to write a well-written piece is to define your topic clearly. You can’t just write anything without understanding your topic. Most importantly, you don’t have to write any ideas that are not related to the main subject you have.

If you do it, you will only make your readers confuse and feel uninterested with your writing.

This is the simplest and easiest technique that a writer should do. Write what the topic is all about in order to provide a clearer concept and for your readers to visualize and understand your ideas.

Writing always starts from knowing your topic and understand it well through systematic research.

You can’t proceed into writing once you don’t have any idea how to discuss your topic. Most likely, you will end up having a writer’s block.

If you as a writer don’t understand your topic well, how can you possible write it for your readers? How will your readers understand your main point?

Make sure you know your topic well. Then you can now define it for your readers and clearly state its meaning to them.

To do that, you must have a purpose in writing. Why is there a need to write your topic? How are you going to influence and reconnect with your readers? How to penetrate their minds and feelings and to make them participate with your intentions?

Once you are ready, you can now proceed to your plans in writing. think deeply and try to focus on how to construct your content with strong points and statements.

Remember that you have to catch your reader’s attention and for them to read your whole writing.

When defining a topic, it’s safe practice to begin with general statements, then move on to more specific ones. Definitions can range in one of three types: formal, informal or extended.

Formal Definitions. Commonly used in scientific, medical and other forms of technical writing, formal definitions begin with a classification of the object in question, followed by a detailing of what it does. There are likely conventions for spilling formal definitions in your specific industry, so make sure you know them. A specialized writing software should help you there. In many situations, the classification and grouping can probably be omitted as well.

Informal Definitions. As opposed to explicitly defining a topic, informal definitions merely imply the meaning. Most of the time, it is embedded creatively into a more powerful introductory statement.

Expanded Definitions. When a topic requires heavier elaboration to clear up, you use expanded definitions. There are many ways to accomplish this, including:

– Defining potentially unfamiliar terms in the original definition.
– Providing concrete examples that solidify the meaning you’ve given.
– Describing the various components that make up a subject.
– Detailing the basic operating principles.
– Explaining its purpose and under what circumstances it is used.
– Explain what its causes and effects are.
– Describe how a term is derived.
– Explain how the opposite of the subject works.
