Funny Things to Say
There are a lot of funny things to say, but somehow, kids say them the best. Kids are genuine and sincere and when they say something funny, many times it’s not meant to get laughs, but it comes from an entirely new point of view and they are really serious when they’re saying it.
Kids look at things with no reference points. In other words, everything they see or hear or say is for the first time. For instance, a mother and father were standing on the patio with their three-year-old daughter when it started to rain. The father, looking up at the gray clouds said, “It looks like it’s going to rain cats and dogs.” The little daughter slowly raised her head and looked up into the sky as if waiting for the first puppy and kitten to come down from the rain clouds. She looked at her mom, and then her dad and said, “Can we keep them?” She actually thought that hundreds of cats and dogs were going to rain from the sky, instead of what the phrase really meant: a lot of rain is going to fall.
The world is new to kids and so is everything they see. That’s one of the reasons adults like to hang around with their kids; because the parents get to see the world from a whole new point of view. A point of view they have forgotten. (The other reason, of course, is that the parents love their children more than anything else in the world.)
Besides funny things to say, kids actually say some pretty interesting things. A mom and dad and their four year old daughter were sitting at the little girl’s plastic play table having dinner, like they did every night, and the little girl says to them in a rather sad and serious tone, “Why am I so different?” The father didn’t know what to say except, “You’re not different.” And the mother immediately jumped in with, “You’re different because you are so smart and brilliant, and you are so beautiful and everyone loves you so much!” The mother just went on and on and on and it was truly amazing how she lovingly tried to make her daughter feel good about herself. After they all calmed down, the rest of the dinner was normal, but the parents were really bothered by what the daughter had said. “Where could she have gotten that idea,” they thought.
The parents were stumped by their daughter’s thinking of herself as different from everybody else. They just couldn’t figure out why she felt that way. A few days later the three of them were watching a video that they had seen many times before. It was called “Tarzan,” (the animated version). The family was enjoying the movie when the scene comes up where little Tarzan puts mud on his face trying to look like his adopted mother, the ape. It just doesn’t work for him and he says, “Why am I so different?” in a sad and serious tone. The mother and father of the little girl, watching the film, look at each other with huge smiles on their faces as they realize that their beautiful little daughter always has wonderful and funny things to say.
