Mens Watches Aren’t Just For Men!
In recent years many of the top designer watch brands have begun to reconsider how they go about producing some of their ranges of ladies designer watches. Style and fashion are of course always changing, so much so in the past couple of years that women have shown a preference for larger watches. As a result, sales of the more traditional smaller sized watches have declined.
Several well known watch brands have started to market their men’s designer watches towards women by adding more femine touches such as extra design flourishes and precious stones to their existing men’s range of watches. This has notably been done recently by Rolex with their Datejust model which comes in versions with and without diamonds. The marketing ploy seems to have worked with several top actresses being spotted wearing it. Patek Philippe is another watch company which has been quick to jump on the bandwagon, in this case with their Nautilus watch which has been given a slightly softer shape so that it will appeal to women more.
It used to be the case that some of the watch brands thought that they would lose out on a significant market share by bringing out ranges just for women – these companies have been proven very much incorrect as these watches are the top sellers. A good case in point would be the designer watch brand, Panerei. This is an italian company which was formed in 1860 and never made anything other than it’s four or five basic watch models. Panerei watches have always been known for their basic design and oversized faces. There were never any extravagant, complicated designs or expensive diamonds to be found anywhere. They had always manufactured men’s watches, however now women have started to purchase these watches especially now they are more widely available in America and in less expensive form.
IWC is an example of another watch brand that has always produced men’s watches since it started up in 1868. These watches have always been very masculine in design, specifically the Big Pilots range of watches. These designer watches have always had a very loyal following, which now includes women who prefer the look of stronger looking men’s watches.
Another noticable trend over the past few years is the decline in popularity of bulkier watches that contain a lot of jewels. The drop in demand for these more ‘bling’ style of watches has been down to the change in price of metals. For example if the price of stainless steel goes up, then clearly brands will need to increase the price of their watches to account for this. Recently the price of gold has gone sky high, to the point where gold buyers seem to be on the corner of every street. As such, the price of watches which include touches of gold has also gone up. This has resulted in consumers gravitating more towards sport watches as they are a lot cheaper, yet still retain a stylish and fashionable design.
So next time someone asks you ‘what is it that women want?’ you can reply ‘mens watches!’.
