Tips In Choosing A Pet Guinea Pig

If you work or go to school the whole day who likes to have a pet but still undecided on what pet will you be choosing, a guinea pig is best for you. Guinea pigs likes to be alone in the day since most of them are inactive during daytime but still can survive for as long as they are with another guinea pig companion. Guinea pigs can survive in both indoors and outdoors for as long as you keep them in cages with several rooms. Unlike other pet rodents, guinea pigs require more sensitive care. Also, the materials used in caring guinea pigs are quite expensive. But, they can live more years compared to other pet rodents.

What makes guinea pigs popular among all rodents today is that they have a unique character that every pet owner will enjoy. They are also sweet, require care less often, attractive and they often come in variety of colors. They are sociable and playful also that is why it is best if they will come in pair if you plan on taming this rodent. In pairing, it is best if you will pair the same sexes since if you will keep the male and female guinea pigs together, they will continuously breed and the male guinea pig might injure the pregnant guinea pig especially if you are clueless of its pregnancy. Male and female guinea pigs should be separated even though your purpose is to breed them and should only be exposed together in shorter period to mate. Also, one guinea pig should be younger or older than the other so that they will live harmoniously.

If you have pet rabbits at home, it is not recommended to make them your guinea pigs’ companion. It is because, even though rabbits have similar characteristics with guinea pigs, rabbits are so playful that they might jump using their powerful legs and might hit or cause serious injury to your guinea pigs. So it is best to separate them even the smallest breed of rabbit is not advisable. Also, in terms of expressing their communication, rabbits tend to have a different means of communication unlike guinea pigs who communicate well. That is why the best companion for guinea pigs is still an additional guinea pig.

When making a choice on what guinea pig to tame, a cage should be considered first since this is the place where you will be keeping them for a long time. Next, during selection in pet stores, inspect the condition of the cage since faulty keeping of these rodents inside a dirty cage can cause serious illness to them without being noticed. If you observed that the cage is so dirty, it is better to buy in other pet stores. The cage should offer them instant access on their water and food. The cage should not be overcrowded with guinea pigs because it increases risk for injury to them. Lastly, the guinea pig should look healthy like having a firm body, bright eyes, clean coat, and alert and should be free from other unusual observations such as sticky eyes, dirty bottom, sneezing and sleepiness. They are also ideally at least 6-8 weeks of age before choosing them.
