A Limo Can Help a New Employee Make a Good Impression
It is the first day at your first job out of college. The task is to transport your company’s clients from the airport. This is not what you studied four years for. This is not what you racked up major student debt for. You need to impress your bosses so you can move up the corporate ladder–fast.
You are at the airport. You have dressed for success in your power suit. For the fifteenth time, you verify that you are holding the sign with the client’s name on it straight. She is from France. You review the few phrases you remember from your freshman French class. Those days are so far off. You wish you could go back. You squirm, then you straighten your tie — again.
Finally, the client walks out. No, walk isn’t the right word. She glides. She is absolutely the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. And intimidating. She is so intimidating. Don’t you hate the way French people can pull-off intimidating? It is genetically wired in them. You walk up to her and hold out your hand. She looks down at it, then her eyes move to the right. She grimaces. You follow her gaze and gulp.
Maybe transporting clients in your 1998 hatchback was not such a hot idea after all, even if you did spend two hours cleaning it.
Talk about a bad first impression. “Gulp” is right.
So now let us rewind. We are going to give you another chance to make a good first impression. Before you run off to pick up the client in your own car, a flash of inspiration hits you. Why not rent a limo instead? You check with Accounting to see whether that is allowed. They practically scoff and respond with “Of course, that is how we always do it here.”
The accountant hands you the budget for limo rentals. It doesn’t look like there’s much money for it. You slink out and start calling around LA. The prices look pretty steep, but you keep calling. Remember, if you don’t impress your bosses, you are sunk.
Finally, you find the first limo company in LA willing to talk prices. What’s more, they start asking questions you never thought to ask, like, “Would you like drinks served? Appetizers?” What a great idea. When the representative realizes it’s your first day on the job, she takes pity. She gives some great advice. You type that company’s number in your phone.
Flash forward to the next time you are assigned to pick up clients at the airport. You are holding the sign with the correct client’s name. Check. The same French beauty glides off the plane. She sees you hold the sign and immediately frowns, remembering the last time. You smile confidently; this time is going to be different. Reluctantly, she follows you out to the parking area searching for the car, not seeing the shining stretch limo before her. She slides into the seat and is immediately handed a cold beverage and a choice of appetizer. A smile is seen on her face.
Most people only get one chance to make a first impression. Make that first impression a limo, not a hatchback, when meeting with potential clients.
