An Insight Into Event Management

Event management is a very widely used term these days. It is emerging as an increasingly powerful and lucrative profession. As a result a lot of young career oriented people are entering the event management industry. However, what does event management imply? What exactly does an event manager do?

In layman terms, event management means organising an event and ensuring that it creates the maximum desired effect. There are certain processes involved in the concept of event management. These are crucial:

– The first step is to study all the nitty-gritty details about the brand that is being advertised through the event.
– The second and very important step is to locate who the target is. Which is the section of society that the brand is relevant to?
– After this comes the conceptualisation of the event.
– Then comes the figuring out of the logistics and the technical details
– Finally comes the event itself which has to be controlled and managed.
– The last stage is post event. Here the event is analysed and the returns on the money invested are also calculated.

The entire point of organising and managing an event is to make sure that the brand reaches the target consumer. Also, a successful event has to yield some financial return on the capital invested.

While event management includes so many stages, the task of an event manager is mostly limited to carrying out and managing the main event in itself. All the pre and post event stages are usually carried out by other officials involved with the brand.

An event manager has to have different qualities, including creative thinking. The entire point is to carry out an event which will have an impact on the masses. For this, a certain element of ‘out of the box’ thinking is required. There has to be many audio visual elements as well as writing. Another important quality is having good people skills. An event is all about people. An ideal event manager has to be able to balance all kinds of people and interact with them in a dynamic and efficient manner.

There are certain aspects of an event that a manager has to pay very close and detailed attention to. These are crucial to the efficiency of the event in itself.

– Safety of the attendees, i.e. crowd management
– Lights and audio quality
– Security
– Schedule
– Venue

The best career opportunities lie with corporations and media houses. They always organise events to enhance brand awareness. Then there are public relations organisations as well as non profit companies. Event managers are highly priced and are given all the facilities that they require for doing their job in the best possible way.

Currently event management has become a million dollar industry. There are event managers involved in some of the biggest events in the world. From the Olympic Games to the Academy Awards, the smooth running depends on the event managers who are working behind the stage.
