One of the first responders in a medical emergency, whether it is an emergency illness, a heart attack or an automobile accident, is the paramedic. Each state requires special certification for a paramedic. It will usually take two years of formal education to complete the stages to becoming a paramedic.

Educational Requirements:

A person who shows an interest in EMT or Emergency Medical Technician training must be at least eighteen years old and have a high school diploma or a grade equivalent diploma or GED. Those who are in high school should concentrate on subjects that involve math, chemistry, physics and biology. Since being a paramedic takes dexterity and strength, a physical examination must be passed and the applicant must undergo screenings for hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Often states will require that a background check be done for any criminal activity.

Paramedic Training:

There are basic and intermediate training you need to go through before you get to paramedic training.

When you enroll in an EMT-Paramedic program, training includes anatomy and physiology instruction as well as advanced medical skills. This program will typically take one to two years to complete. At this level, students will participate in ambulance runs and clinical rotations. In addition, he is able to read an EKG, use a variety of sophisticated equipment as well as perform endotracheal intubations. Students also learn about soft tissue shock, musculoskeletal trauma, burns, obstetrics and gynecology and pharmacology and toxicology. If a student is interested in getting an associate’s degree, then he must also plan to complete general educational requirements in addition to the paramedic training coursework.

Certification:

For a paramedic to become certified, means that she must successfully complete the “National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians” examination. Some states also offer certificate examinations for paramedics. Most states will require that a paramedic’s licensure be renewed every two to three years. Individual states may also require refresher and continuing education courses.

Finding Work:

A paramedic has the opportunity to work in a variety of environments such as working in a hospital’s ER department or working for different ambulance companies to provide necessary care to patients who are being transferred from one facility to another. Some paramedics may wish to work in a remote location such as an oil rig where they usually are the primary caregiver.

At other times, paramedics may wish to choose to work in high-traffic areas such as casinos, sporting events or concerts. They remain on standby in case there is any kind of emergency that requires immediate medical attention or perhaps even a trip to a hospital’s emergency room. When a natural disaster occurs such as a hurricane, flood or tornado, paramedics are usually the first responders.
