Transforming Terrifically Terrifying Trick Or Treat Decor
Halloween is the funfest night of the year. You get to be anyone you choose, and nobody cares! You can be the prettiest Marilyn Monroe or the scariest Marilyn Manson, freak everybody out as Frankenstein, or seduce them as Frank Sinatra. It’s the one night of the year where almost scaring somebody to death is actually applauded as being well done!
If you truly love Halloween, you can create the scariest house on the street and have everyone’s favorite place to be, inside and outside. The use of a few props, a little paint, and a perfectly scary costume, and you will have the neighborhood kids running for Momma, and coming back for more. Throwing the ultimate Halloween party can put you on the top of the list as the hostess of the year.
Start with the outside, forget about using cheery autumn colors, and remove every bit of cheer from your exterior. Scary is not happy, it’s bleak and dreary; which is why the Celts associated it with the doorway between death and life, open one night a year on Samhain. Use the Celts as your example to follow and create a doorway between here and the hereafter.
Create a graveyard in your flower bed using the dark purple and blackened plants of the elephant ear family. Use dead flowers, and stark vines around the railings of your porch. Bring in the traditional hay bales, but dress your scarecrow in a black hooded robe, complete with scythe and ravens resting nearby; Poe used the raven as a harbinger of doom, you can too. Skeletons and ghost abound on your front porch, hiding behind the veils of black gauzy material and cobwebs. Set a fan on low speed and direct its flow over the porch and watch the dance of the macabre begin. Cover your doorway with black, and hang a wreath of dead roses and black dried flowers to welcome your guest, if any make it to the door. Line the sidewalk with large candles, and turn off the lights, except for a small glowing lamp placed near the door.
Use a black rug with a deaths head moth or skull and crossbones as a welcome mat. Those souls brave enough to approach can enter through a flowing wave of mist and smoke, created using dry ice. Open the door onto a scene of darkness, filled with more spider webs, low light, and glowing creatures, just out of sight. A cd of scary sounds can set the scene for what lies within.
Your dining room can be set with all black place settings, and feature a skull as a punchbowl, with his cranium open to reveal gelatin masses floating within the red liquid within. Large black rugs, with dots of red can be the perfect place to display the headless corpses of former guest! Fun foods and games featuring slimy, moving food groups can add emphasis to your scary party, and leave guest wondering just what it is you have prepared. Allow the children to play during the grownups party. Dress them as the fiends you admire from movies, and let them appear suddenly in strange places and your guest will never know what to expect next.
Every room in your house can feature touches of the strange and eerie. Use a white rug in the hallway, and add touches of red “blood” and brains created from adding instant oatmeal to fake blood. For a really good brain matter splatter, use the slimy guts of a pumpkin, and soak in fake blood, and let them drop from about three feet off the floor.
Making drinkable fake blood is easy; just use 3 three drops of red food coloring, 1/2 cup of corn syrup, and 1/2 cup grenadine. Make it thicker for props by adding cornstarch slurry. Here’s hoping your Halloween is the best one ever, be sure you ask about heart conditions when you ask for a RSVP!
