Five Easy Ways to Control Clutter in the Home
Has your house become so cluttered that you fear you will end up on the next episode of Hoarders: Buried Alive? If so, then these easy projects will help you to control and conquer clutter throughout the home, allowing you to be more organized so that you can better enjoy your home.
Battling Paper Clutter
One of the biggest offenders when it comes to clutter in many homes is paper clutter. Paper can really pile up fast. A good way to battle paper clutter within the home is to set aside a particular day as ‘paper day’ and ask everyone in the family to pitch in with de-cluttering paper. Once you have gotten rid of unwanted paper in the home, place a small basket in a common area as a to-do basket for paper like outgoing mail. Then position a trash can at the door that is nearest to the mailbox, and then throw junk mail in as you come in with the mail. Buy each family member their own individual file cabinet so that everyone has a place to store their important papers.
Conquering Clutter in the Closet
Closets are a breeding ground for clutter. After all, out of sight, out of mind, right? It takes the whole family to organize closets throughout the home. Set aside a day for closet cleaning and instruct everyone to gather up the things that they no longer want or use and then donate them to charity or have a tag sale with the items. Once the closets have been emptied of things you no longer want, you can then buy new shelving organizers and put everything into its own place.
Tackling the Home Office
Working in a home office that is cluttered up with trash and unnecessary items can be frustrating. Items like kids’ toys and so on that tend to infiltrate your office over time need to be taken out and put wherever they are usually stored. Once you have nothing left but the items that go in the office, invest in the following items if you don’t already have them in place: a filing cabinet that is large enough to accommodate your paperwork, a paper shredder that fits over your trash can, some storage bins, a white board, and a basket for both “in” and “out” paperwork. (Hopefully you’ve already gotten rid of paper clutter from the project above, but if not, start out tackling the home office by getting rid of paper that you don’t need).
Getting a Handle on Kitchen Cabinets
Tired of opening the kitchen cabinet and then ducking for cover in case something falls on your head? That’s certainly a stressful way to start your daily chores in the kitchen! Set aside time to clean out your kitchen cabinets. You will likely find that you have an excess number of dishes and other containers, so donate them to your favorite charity. Sort through your cupboards, throwing away any products that are no longer fresh or that have a bad date. Buy some cabinet racks that allow you to double up on your cupboard space. Rearrange your kitchen wares so that you can have the items used most frequently in the handiest locations.
Organizing the Workshop – For Working!
And finally, clutter is a big problem in most workshops, rendering the space unusable for actual work. Peg boards can be used to keep your tools within reach and also visible so that you can find what you need fast. A rack that has containers for holding your screws, nails, and other small items is also great for ridding the clutter out of the workshop. Invest in a cabinet or other shelving unit for power tools. You’ll find that your workshop is not only more organized, but it is also safer and more enjoyable to work in.
