Own Your Jump Serve
Anyone who plays volleyball knows how to spike the ball. Spiking the ball involves jumping at the ball, hitting it hard and fast, and sending it over the net in a way that makes it hard to hit back. If you can spike the ball, then you can learn the jump serve with ease. The only difference between the jump serve and spiking the ball is that the jump serve is spiked from 30 feet behind the net. A good jump serve can be a devastating weapon in your arsenal.
Don’t be Afraid to Show how it’s Done:
If you know exactly how to spike a ball, the jump serve is the perfect way to show the world the perfect way to execute it. When performed correctly, the jump serve is the ideal spiked ball. Remember the basics of a spike: set, aim, jump, hit. The ball is set over your head and you look ahead to where you want the ball to land, making it as hard as possible to return. You jump into the ball, hitting it with as much force as you can while still maintaining control. Since the jump serve is the same thing, it is easy to show the world that you know exactly what you are talking about when you say you know how to spike the perfect ball.
Use the Advantage You are Given:
When serving the ball, you are given the advantage of time. Spiking the ball in the middle of game play forces you to make immediate decisions on where and how hard to hit the ball. Since you are given the time to study the other end of the court, take that time to decide exactly where you want the ball to go. You want to ensure that you hit it into open field where no one is standing. Aim for that perfect spot and ideally you will get your ace from the serve. Even if you don’t get the ace, you have created a play that is difficult to return, opening a scoring situation by forcing the opposing team to play the way you want them to.
Another way to take advantage of the time is to remember that you are setting for yourself. Every spiker knows that there is an ideal way to have the ball set for them. With the jump serve, you are given the opportunity to give yourself what your own personal perfect set is. Giving yourself the perfect set will allow you to spike the ball in the way that you feel is ideal for you.
Never be Predictable:
With the basics down, the jump serve can be easy to learn and deliver. Hitting the ball the same way every time can cause you to become predictable, making it that much easier to return the ball. Learn to change your hitting style in order to perfect your jump serve. You may want to hit it more toward the top for a top-spin ball once, then hit it dead center for a straight, hard driven ball the next time. If you learn how to control the balls behavior with only the hand you hit with, you will ensure that there is no way to tell from serve to serve exactly where the ball will land next.
The Killer Serve:
The perfect jump serve, much like the perfect spike, can be a game winner every time. Learning how to deliver this killer serve can make a game that much easier to play. Why sit there hitting the ball back and forth for so long when you can put the game away with a few well placed ace serves?
