Christmas Fun With the Snowman Cupcake

Christmas is nearly here, and depending on where you live, the weather is getting colder (unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere, where you are getting ready for the summer). At this time of the year, thanks to Bing Crosby we think of snow on the ground, a red-cloaked Santa Claus, presents, and ornately decorated trees. In fact, Christmas has become very much a celebration of the winter, and even if you are not a religious Christian – or not a Christian at all – its motifs have become a regular part of western life.

However, some aspects of the White Christmas are not quite as rosy as the old song will have you believe. Another aspect of this time of the year is the winter vacation. That’s right – the kids are home, the TV is constantly on, and if the weather is cold enough to snow the chances are that they are going stir crazy during their time at home. There is a limit to the number of board games that everyone can play and after a while even the kid with the squarest eyes will get sick of the TV. So, while the actual Christmas party with your family and friends will hopefully be a lot of fun, the days before and after can be quite miserable.

One idea to keep the kids happy at home is to do some baking with them. And one of the best ways to entertain them is to bake some cupcakes for Christmas with them. This will keep them busy, give them something nice to eat, and provide a great creative outlet for them. Of course, it’s not just the actual baking that is the fun, but also trying some of the many cupcake decorating ideas that are out there.

One of the most fun ideas is making a snowman cupcake. Once you have baked the actual little cakes, the rest is easy. Frost each cupcake with white icing and then make the head and torso of the snowman from one marshmallow with another half placed on top of it. Using a pretzel stick to steady him, put your snowman onto the cupcake.

Here is where the fun begins. You can make arms for your snowman out of more pretzel sticks. His hat is made from candies. As for his face and other decorations, you can draw lines with decorator’s gel, or you can be a bit more ambitious and make his eyes from chocolate chips and his mouth from a small piece of glace cherry or candied orange. Use a piece of fruit leather to make a scarf.

This is where your imagination can take off, and by the time you have finished, your snowman cupcake will look so good that you will probably forget that he is edible. He will just look too good to eat! But on the other hand, with all these delicious ingredients, you may hardly get any time to look at your creation before you decide to eat it! And you can be guaranteed that it will taste absolutely great … and will also keep your bored kids very quiet for quite some time!
