How to Build a Leading Christian Outreach Ministry

Outreach, by its simple and literal definition, is reaching out to meet the needs of others outside your care. There are some needs that most people feel that are spiritually motivated such as: love, forgiveness, purpose and meaning in life, and acceptance. What better place to meet these needs than in a growing, healthy church.

A church cannot be effective in its outreach ministry if it is not founded on godly and biblical truth. The church must first experience firsthand the answer to these needs before offering it to others outside its fold. Outreach should not be limited to simply an event or activity. It should undergo enough preparation and planning. Consider the following points in order to build a leading Christian outreach ministry.

First, be authentic. Obedience to God’s command of loving one’s neighbor as oneself is the basic way of demonstrating true love and care for the people outside the church. Individual encounter and growth should initially be experienced by every member of the outreach team. The members should also display common love and concern for each other before disembarking into the “world.’

Second, be compassionate. Sharing of one’s testimony and the victories of other Christians could be one way of showing those outside of the faith that what is being shared is true. A firsthand experience of God’s love and forgiveness drives a person to understand the ones in need of the same. Outreach is a sharing of one’s own life to others and it is not going to be easy. It is risky and may even be painful.

In addition, be a good example. As a church or as a small group sharing the gospel to others outside the church, a healthy relationship must be established among themselves is a requirement. “Practice what you preach” should be the guiding rule of every outreach ministry. As the Bible says, true disciples are known because of the way they love each other.

Moreover, be an encourager. Knowing that new believers need more attention and care is vital in establishing relationships with them. Some are reluctant because they do not have friends within the church yet. Be the first to offer a smile and a listening ear. Be always willing to help in whatever way possible. This would mean letting go of one’s comfort once in a while.

Lastly, be prayerful. It has been said that prayer is power. The more intimate a person is with the Lord, the better he/she becomes in sharing his/her life to others. Always make it a point that every member of the outreach ministry has a growing relationship with God. The group must also spend regular prayer time together lifting to God every person they plan or have reached out for God.

Overall, a leading Christian outreach is borne out of a long process of rising and falling and rising again. It is a life-long experience of God’s grace and faithfulness. The ultimate motive of every outreach is that God should be made famous in everything.
