How to Improve Your Church’s Development
Improving one’s church development depends mainly on having the right people on the right tasks. In choosing leaders or key persons to be placed on the right ministries such as: planning, equipping, music, praise and worship, maintenance, children, youth, men, women, etc. it would always be wise to choose spiritual maturity above anything else. There will be some members who have the technical and intellectual competence but if their hearts are not ready to serve then problems may rise along the way.
This does not mean though that people who are mature but without talents should be put in key positions. This is where training comes in. It will not be easy and it may take some time before members can become efficient and effective leaders. However, it is important to note that it is worth the wait for the more mature Christians are more teachable and humble than the babes in spirit.
If there seem to be no mature individuals available, then it is best to nurture them first; to wait for them to be ripe for service before expanding the ministry. For instance, if a new convert is tasked to teach Sunday school then there is a danger that he/she may teach concepts that are contrary to biblical truths or the denominations tradition because of his/her lack of knowledge and experience. Choosing mature members would likely prevent other members to stumble because they would be more gentle and patient with their fellows.
The first thing to do is to spend reasonable time in prayer. It is in prayer and Bible study that churches gain strength, wisdom and guidance. By acknowledging one’s helplessness apart from God, God is pleased and it opens the gates of heaven to bless the seekers.
After praying, consultation with a few elders would be beneficial. In cases when only the pastor can be considered mature in the church, he/she can get advice from other pastors from other churches. The trusted individuals must discern God’s will for the church and must be careful and keep whatever they have discussed confidential in order not to hurt the feelings of others..
After careful prayer and consultation have been done, leadership trainings and identification of members’ gifts and talents should be conducted. Invitation to attend the trainings may be announced during the worship service because there may be some members who are truly mature but are only new to the church and so that everybody will be given equal opportunities to be equipped. Most likely, the immature ones will have several excuses.
Individual commitment and consecration should be made to emphasize the accountability of each member to the task at hand. It is not good to be affected by number. Sometimes only a few will commit but it is better to have few volunteers than to handle a bunch of immature and unprepared leaders.
Although members can volunteer, they need to be informed about the seriousness of the matter and that they are not doing the task to feel good about themselves but to please God and edify the church.
When these things have been accomplished, continue to encourage each member to get involved in prayer, evaluation and in finding solutions to problems. Developing unity in diversity can help a church develop in quality and quantity.
