Reasons Why Packaging is Done
Packaging is essential in keeping goods especially food products safe and in good quality before they are used. There are various reasons as to why products are packaged. Primarily it is done to hold the goods directly in order to contain them in a single manageable unit.
In marketing, it is considered important as it assists consumers to identify goods from a certain manufacturer easily. Among the manufacturers, it is done to differentiate similar products in the same market from those of competitors.
In some cases the packaging also contains helpful information about how a particular good should be handled, used, its contents as well as the ingredients used to make the product. The manufacturer can also use it to give instructions on how to use the product, highlight or warn the users of any hazards that might occur as a result of misusing or mishandling the goods.
A product can also be packaged to protect it from damage, tampering, theft, breakage or leakage. For the perishable goods it helps in protecting the goods from changes in moisture and spoilage when exposed to extreme temperatures.
In order to safely transport or move a product from one place to another, manufacturers package products to make the moving easier. For some goods that are assembled or that come in parts, manufactures usually package them together putting similar parts in one container for efficiency purposes. This allows them to save on storage space and be in a position to track the parts easily after they are moved.
One major reason as to why packaging is done by most manufacturers is to attract consumers to purchase the product. The appearance of a product is used by manufacturers and marketers to influence a consumer to buying it. Companies usually invest a lot in packaging as this brings in higher returns when compared to other modes of advertising. The size, colors used, the brand, shapes and other illustrations used all help create an attractive product that is able to market itself.
Packaging has become an influencing factor for most consumers when they are deciding on what product they want to buy. A product may have great features but it may not necessarily yield better returns when compared to a similar product with the same features but which is better packaged.
It also makes it convenient to handle some products especially when they are put together in stacks, enclosed or put in cartons. Distributors find it easier to handle products that are properly packaged rather than those that are dispersed and scattered everywhere. It helps save time and energy for them while they are distributing them to retailers.
For some of the substances such as liquids which are sold or used in portions, it helps in controlling the allocation of these portions. Each good can be packaged according to the precise amount or portion that is needed. Bulky goods can also be packaged in suitable sizes to be used per household. Packaging also helps in reducing misuse by allocating portions in their recommended servings.
