The Top 3 Cellulite Treatments Currently Available: What They Are, Pros And Cons
Cellulite is what happens when the fat directly underneath the skin herniates, or protrudes unevenly from the fat deposits that contain it, thereby causing the dimples and wrinkles that you call \”cellulite\”. With a good diet (plenty of water, fruits, leafy green vegetables, very little trans fats and sugar, etc.) and the right exercises, sometimes you can significantly reduce cellulite, but oftentimes that isn\’t enough and it is necessary to consider other medical options.
There are a number of state-of-the-art treatments that have been developed in recent years to treat it, and they vary in their effectiveness, costs, and side-effects. We\’re going to go over the 3 most popular ones today and give you as much information as we can to help you make a decision about whether or not you want to try one and, if so, which.
Laser Lipolysis
Normal liposuction eliminates small, specific fat deposits (such as those on the abdomen and thighs) and so you might think that if it sucks out the fat then it can suck out the cellulite, when in fact it will likely make it worse: liposuction will actually create more skin depressions and further damage the connective tissues which, considering the fact that cellulite is depressions in the skin that are the result of damaged connective tissue between the fat, is exactly what we don\’t want.
Laser lipolysis, on the other hand, involves using a laser in conjunction with traditional liposuction such that the liposuction sucks the fat out and the laser tightens the skin thereby reducing the appearance of cellulite. Be warned that this is a very new technology only recently approved for general use by the FDA in 2006, and so therefore its effectiveness is still being debated and the long term effects are unknown.
Acoustic Wave Therapy
This is the same ultra-sonic technology used to eliminate kidney stones by crushing them with very high frequency, high pressure sound waves. It works by breaking up the offending connective tissue in the fat cells that are responsible for the dimpling. Again, this particular application of it is fairly new so long term results are unknown, but the results have proved very promising. Also, this is much less invasive and safer than laser lipolysis (which requires regular liposuction which requires surgery and everything that goes along with it such as an incision and general anesthesia) because there\’s no cutting or puncturing of the skin required.
Cellulite Subcision Surgery
This is the least widely available of the three but also the only one that has proven long-term effectiveness. However, it\’s quite invasive as it requires surgery via inserting a cutting tool underneath the skin and using it to cut the bands of connective tissue that are pulling down on the fat deposits and creating the dimples you know as cellulite.
It\’s been around for quite a while now, mainly as a treatment for severe acne scars, but it\’s also been proven effective against cellulite in the long term. It\’s often used in conjunction with fat grafting and is currently marketed under the brand name of \”Rejuveskin\”.
