Catcher in the Rye College Essays Guide (part 2)
You learned about catcher in the rye’s story in the first part of this article that is a guide to write college essays, and learned how Holden depicted his dream to his sister about him being the ‘catcher in the rye’. In this part, we will see what happens after he leaves from his parent’s apartment.
After leaving from there, he decides to reach his former English teacher ‘Mr. Antolini’ who he admired big time. So he gets to Mr. Antolini’s home in the middle of the night and asks for his advice and help. Mr. Antolini gives him couple of advices and allows him to sleep at his place. The teacher tells Holden that the dream or feeling he is having about him being the catcher in the rye is the sign of becoming mature and that it’s a sign about ‘humbly living for a cause and dying nobly’. This clears Holden’s mind and he comes to a conclusion that becoming a catcher in the rye is about being a heroic figure to those children who are most likely to fall from a crazy cliff and being exposed to the evils of ‘adulthood’.
During the whole conversation in which the teacher tells him about the experiences of life, Mr. Antolini has a number of highballs in his hand. Holden gets really upset when he wakes up in the night and finds Mr Antolini patting his head in a weird manner which Holden considers as making a sexual advancement on Holden. So, he finally leaves this house too and decides to head out towards West. In the novel it’s left on the readers to decide whether Mr. antolini was really doing what Holden perceived or it was his deception. When he tells his sister about moving to West, she says she would like to go with him. However Holden denies it as she can’t keep anyone with him as he wants to live alone. This really upsets his sister and she breaks down. So finally Holden decides to stay and then takes her to the central park zoo to make her mood better. Nonetheless, when he sees Phoebe in a carousel ride in the zoo he realizes that he is not, and can not be the catcher in the rye. Rather, he finds himself in a need of help. In the sum up Holden decides to not mention about his current day as he finds it inconsequential. He alludes to getting sick and inhabiting in a psychiatric hospital.
Holden tells that he will be joining school very soon and that he is surprised to find himself missing his former schoolmates Stradlater and Ackley. The novel ends up on the words:
“Do not ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody”
