How to Choose an SEO Expert For Your Business

Choosing an SEO expert is not as easy as choosing some other experts to help your business. There are less reviews because a lot of their customers don\’t want people to leap in and start competing with them. So you have to do a bit more research than you\’d normally expect to make sure that the company you choose to do your search engine optimisation is right for you.

There are several things to consider when you choose an SEO expert. Search engine optimisation is something that needs to be done properly otherwise you run the risk that your expert turns out to be nothing of the sort and does your business more harm than good. It\’s very easy to do things which Google disapproves of and almost as easy to do things which would cause your site to be penalised in the search results.

Start by choosing a few firms to investigate. They don\’t all have to be on the first page of Google for your search (some excellent firms prefer to stay out of the limelight) and they don\’t necessarily need an all singing, all dancing website. But they do need to inspire confidence in you.

Once you\’ve got a shortlist of possible SEO experts, you need to start to check their credentials.

Start by asking what they\’ve done for other sites. It\’s likely that they will quote client confidentiality and this can be a valid excuse but they should still have some sites that they can show you. Otherwise you\’re taking their claims at being the best at face value and that can be a dangerous move.

Then check the competition for the keyword phrases your expert is claiming pole position for. Do this by putting the search term in quote marks and seeing how many sites include the phrase on their page.

That gives you a glimpse of the competing pages but it isn\’t enough. Some keyword phrases are scattered all over the web but no-one really targets them. So use the search modifier allintitle to see how many pages consider the page important enough to use in the title of their page. This number is likely to be smaller than the phrase in quote marks.

A final spot check is the search modifier allinanchor which will tell you whether any other sites on the internet are ranking for that phrase.

All those combined will give you a good feel for how much competition the SEO experts were competing against. The more competition and the higher up the ranks their results come, the better.

If the examples are scattered over time, check whether the example sites are still ranking well for the terms or if they\’ve dropped off the search results. This will give you a handle on whether or not the methods used by your chosen SEO expert are short or long lived.

Doing this process with two or three chosen SEO experts should give you a much better feel for who is doing the best job.
