Sometimes the Primary Aim in Life is Survival
If you have ever been trapped in a situation that not only seemed dangerous but proved to be dangerous you can relate to this article. I not talking here about a little danger, a thrilling such as a rollercoaster ride or anything similar. I am talking about being real life situation that might cost you your life.
I experienced this when I was 14 years old. I was run over by a 1976 Monte Carlo. I did some research on the car and not only does the body of the car sit very close to the ground, it also ways over 2 tons. That\’s over 4000 pounds without any passengers. I will get back to this later. But, for now just understand that I was as close to dead, possibly dead at one point, as a person gets without going to meet his maker.
If you\’ve taken psychology classes you are probably familiar with all of the great founders of psychology. B.F. Skinner, Ivan Pavlov, John Watson, Jean Piaget, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, and E.B. White (wait a minute, he was not a psychologist). This is just a short list so I did not include them all. But, my survival demonstrates just about every theory that was ever purposed by these intellectuals. I will not go into each theory here and how it relates to my survival. I will save that for my future articles. I will however, touch on a couple of these theories and how they relate how I survived being run over by a two ton car. Since this is just a short article and I am limited in space, I will have to be brief.
How I was run over by a two ton car:
It was the best baseball practice I had ever had. In fact, it was the first day of baseball practice of the spring of 1978. I was hitting everything that the pitchers could throw me. I just knew that my time had come. My timing of the ball was perfect and I had no fear of being hit by a fast pitch. I was slamming one pitch after another.
After telling me what a great job I did, my base ball coach told me to ride in the car with the assistant baseball coach who would take me and my little brother home. We got in the car and rode toward my house. It was just a normal day and I was happy.
When we reached the road that I lived on, we saw some neighbors playing basketball. We often played basketball in their yard. So, on this day we decided to stop and play with our neighbors which were also our friends. We had fun and I felt great.
When we started to leave my neighbors house, I discussed walking to my house since it was just a about a quarter of a mile from where we were playing basketball. But, my assistant coach told me that it would be better just to ride on the hood. So, my little brother and I got on the hood of the car and we started riding in the direction of my house. We were having fun.
Suddenly, the car hit a hole on the old dirt road I lived on. I fell in front of the car and landed on my feet. I ran about 3 steps. There was one big problem. The two ton vehicle was right behind me and still moving. I fell in front of the car. I heard bones cracking. The made a snapping sound which changed into a crunching sound.
The front tire of the car had run completely over my chest, just missing my head. The car rolled me over a few times. When it came to a stop, the back tire was centered on top of the small of my back. My brother began to scream for the driver to get the car off of me. The driver got out and looked. He saw me trapped under the tire, face down. He panicked, got back into the car and sped off. I didn\’t see him again until years later.
I opened my eyes. I was blind. I got up and started running in the direction of my house but collapsed after a couple of few steps. I was literally broken to pieces. My back was broken, my ribs were broken, and many other bones were broken. My lung was punctured and my air was running out. I had burns from the tire across my chest and especially across my lower back. I was dying and I was almost dead.
From that moment until a much later date, I started at the bottom of Maslow\’s triangle and worked my way back up. For years afterwards, every time I heard the sound of a car engine, my mind went back to being trapped under that two ton car. Every now and then when I get down and out, and I\’m feeling blue, I think listen to the sound of a car engine and I realized that I\’ve been through worse.
