Closing Down a Business: Dealing With Its End
Not all businesses will survive for many, many years. Unfortunately, yours can be one of them. Letting go of something you’ve been working hard on can be very painful. It’s not unusual to hear of prominent business owners falling into a deep state of depression after they are forced to close their business.
However you should know that there will always be ways on how to cope with the loss a lot better. Here are just some of them:
1. Allow yourself to go through grief. A loss is a loss, regardless if it’s a person or not. Your business may something you have learned to love. One of the best ways to deal with the pain is to allow yourself to grieve. Make sure too that people will understand your so-called mourning period.
That doesn’t mean, though, you have to wallow for such a long time. Give yourself a good time to do it. After that, stand up, dust yourself off, and move on.
2. Learn from it. You can give honor to its demise and to your labor and pain by knowing where you actually went wrong. Learn from your mistakes, and make sure you never forget them. Take time to assess what happened. Ask yourself the question, “Where did I go wrong?” Remember to apply the lessons learned once you decide to open another business.
3. Get your confidence back. When you lose something important, it’s as if you also lose a part of yourself, especially your sense of confidence. There’s always the feeling of failure.
It’s not a good idea to lose your self-esteem because it’s one of the keys to redeem yourself. If you find it hard to do so, you can utilize subliminal messages.
What are subliminal messages? These are words, sounds, or images that have special meanings. They are picked up by the subconscious, where they are unfiltered but stored. Subliminal messages, in this situation, may also be called affirmations. When you speak of subliminal messages regularly, they can help transform your current state of mind. They can change a negative emotion or thought to one that’s positive.
Here are some examples:
My life is not defined by this failure.
I consider this a lesson, not a failure.
I am looking forward to trying again.
Tomorrow is another day to correct my mistakes.
I am not scared of failing.
4. Have a strong support system. As mentioned, you can suffer from depression or invite a lot of negative emotions and thoughts with the closing down of your business. It’s essential therefore you have an excellent support system composed of people who truly care about you and can provide you with strength.
5. Leave it to the lawyers. Reduce your sources of stress as much as possible. Allow your lawyers to deal with dissolution of the business, payments for creditors, management of debts, and liquidation of assets. These legalities can cause plenty of headaches, and you don’t want them while you’re still so vulnerable.
