Gear Up Fashionably for the 2011 Spring and Summer Seasons
For this year’s colorful spring and summer seasons, fashion designers seemed reinvigorated and upbeat, featuring their designs that are refreshing and at the same time wearable. Once again, we will be seeing wonderful inspirations coming from the 1950s to the 1970s from the ‘pin up queen’ to the Bettie Page of the 50s and the 60s with Jackie O. Traditional prints will still make it for Summer and Spring of 2011 but new takes on the classic ones. Florals will be reinvented with a intricate mix of geometric shapes as what you may have seen in Erdem. Retro florals are also expected such as the 50s inspired prints you can see at Dior and banana leaf prints.
Among the popular fabrics for Spring/Summer include silk, cotton, lace and chiffon. Leathers, tweed and feathers will also be featured as an upcoming trend for the sunny seasons. Chanel has already showcased their classic distressed tweeds and feathers have already been showcased across the board with Chanels’ trimming collars.
The 1960s Woman
The 1960s woman trend for this year’s spring and summer seasons is significantly referenced to Chanel’s catwalk where the classic tweed suits were showcased. Monochrome colors gave the collection this retro and mod feel, brought up to date with distressed fabrics and feature trims. A modern edge was added to the classic Chanel tailoring with the help of heavy clump heels, designer handbags, leather accessories and platform sandals.
The 1970s Sophistication versus Glam Rock
The 1970s fashion was given a nod in 2 different looks- that is to glitter & Glam Rock attitude and on the flip side the sophisticated 1970s look by Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger. Miu Miu recently showcased bright blocks mixed with black/white. The Spring/Summer collection from Miu Miu featured several demure high necks and mid length pleated silk dresses styled with bolero jackets in different metallic colors. The dresses featured nice bold prints that highlighted blocks of stars, hearts and color. The outfits were also teamed with the 1980s style pointed stilettos and nice large clutch bags giving the Miu Miu makeover with the use of gorgeous scalloped detailing and flashy contrasting colors. On its flip side, the collection was given a more wearable and sensible 70s look that can be seen anywhere else. Sonia Rykel offered a nod to the 1970s sophistication while having her signature fun colors and stripes by showcasing oversized jumpsuits and tunics, matched with the 1970 brimmed hats. The House of Holland represented a good balance of these looks with nice playsuits and shirt dresses.
The 1950s Pin Up Trend
This fashion trend was featured at Galliano’s Dior show which welcomed guest with a quote from the pin up legendary icon, Bettie Page. Fabrics for this trend include cotton and chiffon with frilly flirty details you will love. Dior also featured beautiful sheer dresses that can be worn over your swimwear. The 50s pin up trend will also showcase culottes, wide leg trousers and high waistlines.
